POSITION SUMMARY : Surgical Technologist

The primary purpose of the Surgical Tech position is to perform pre-operative procedures such as selection and placement of appropriate surgical instruments, supplies and equipment; to scrub and provide instruments, sutures and other sterile supplies during surgical procedures. The Surgical Tech in Sterile Central receives soiled and contaminated instruments, equipment and trays from surgery, nursing units and patient care departments. The Surgical Tech in Sterile central cleans disinfects and sterilizes these items by operating washers and autoclave sterilizers according to established procedures. Performs variable duties related to the Surgery unit in accordance with established Hospital Policies and Procedures. The Surgical Tech has the responsibility of reporting, incidents, patient and/or employee issues, work related accidents and any unusual events to the Registered Nurses and who are responsible for the delivery of patient care. Strives daily to give all customers very good care and promotes Valley View Medical Centers' Standards of Behavior and performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS :

Degree / Licensure / Certification / Registration : Completion of a Surgical Technician program or equivalent experience; Surgical Tech certification highly preferred. Current BLS certification required. Completed Competency Based Skills Checklists for units assigned.

Experience Required : One (1) year experience is desired.

Special Skills & Qualifications :
Must have strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Effective human relations skills are required for interfacing with team members, all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families and other contacts. Must possess the ability to effectively function in a stressful environment. Must possess the ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time and lift heavy objects; assist patients to and from bed/wheelchair/gurney; and to perform the essential duties of the position. Must possess the ability to use the following equipment: Telephone / Overhead Paging System / Fax Machine / Calculator / Computer / Wheelchair / Gurney / Hospital Beds. Must be able to work any scheduled shifts. Must be willing to periodic overtime and be prepared to take call as requested. Completed Competency Based Skills Checklists for unit(s) assigned.
