Air Force Judge Advocate (JAG)
As a member of this elite group of law professionals, you'll be part of the team that provides a full range of legal services to the U.S. Air Force and its people. You'll also enter a world of opportunity - one where you can take on immediate responsibility, continue your education and gain experience working around the globe in any number of law fields.
If you become a JAG in the U.S. Air Force, you'll wield the most powerful force in the world: the rule of law. Your battles will be for justice, for the clients you represent and for the freedom and values we hold dear as a nation. Receive specialized training and immediately engage in an exciting, diversified practice of law that includes criminal, international, operational, environmental, medical, labor, space and civil law. You'll focus on your clients and professional development without the distraction of billable hours, so you'll have time for more important things such as promoting justice and providing for the common defense. As an Air Force JAG, new professional and personal experiences will be a way of life.
Quality of Life
The experience of practicing law in a military environment is markedly different from - and we believe better than - that afforded to lawyers in the private sector. Beyond the career itself, as an active-duty legal professional in the Air Force, you'll enjoy a quality of life second to none. We offer the opportunity to serve in a rewarding career with benefits such as competitive salaries, tax-free housing and food allowances, full comprehensive medical and dental care and 30 days of vacation with pay each year. You'll also have the opportunity to travel, live and work in exciting locations throughout the United States and the world. If you make a career out of Air Force service, you'll have the option of retirement with pension and benefits after only 20 years of service.
Specialized training courses and continuing legal educational opportunities are abundant and provided at government expense. There are short courses for prosecutors, defense counsel and military judges. Also, specialty courses are provided in such areas as medical law, labor law, environmental law, information and operational law, utility contract negotiation and government contracts.
In addition, JAGs are competitively selected every year to return to law school for LL.M.s in specialties like government contracts (procurement), labor law, air and space law, international law and environmental law. Upon completion of the program, Judge Advocates can expect assignments to position within their areas of expertise.
You must be a U.S. citizen. You must be less than 35 years of age. You must be a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school and be admitted to the highest court of any state. You must be willing to travel and relocate. You must complete an Air Force medical examination and be medically qualified by the Air Force Surgeon General prior to commissioning.
Selection is competitive, but we consider more than just your grades, law school and LSAT score.
