JOB SUMMARY (overview of job): Under the leadership of Director of Laboratory Services or designee the Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the day to day operations for laboratory services. The following functions will be the responsibility of the Laboratory Assistant variable upon assigned area.
Under general supervision is responsible for receiving specimens.
Responsible for entering delivered specimens into the computer.
Responsible for performing waived/point of care testing as directed in policy, procedure, manufacturer's instructions or regulation.
Responsible for preparing samples, setting up and maintaining equipment and assisting with the running of equipment for sample testing.
Responsible for timely and accuracy waived testing result entry/reporting.
Responsible for work area maintenance including supply management, cleanliness, and professional appearance.
Provide exceptionally positive customer service and public interaction.
Assist other Point of Care Testing areas with routine quality management to maintain regulatory and organizational compliance.
Daily Operation : Assists the Department Director or designee in the day to day operations of the Laboratory Services Department.
Billing: Coordinate with the Billing and Finance Departments to insure that laboratory billing is correct and current with best practice, fair market and government regulations for the laboratory.
Patient Care: Works with Leadership, Phlebotomy Coordinators, Client Services, Data analysts, Point Of Care Coordinator, Pathologists, Technical Laboratory Supervisors, Nursing to foster collaborative relationships and ensure consistent and integrated approach to providing services.
Policies, protocols and Safety : Works collaboratively with other areas to develop, implement and adhere to policies and procedures to comply with rules, regulations, and state and federal law; ensures practices to support patient safety
CQI & QA : Responsible for working with the Lab Director or designee for the development and participation in both CQI and QA yearly plans and activities.
Staffing & Scheduling : Coordinate with Lab Director or designee in development of staffing schedules that meet client and patients needs.
Regulatory Compliance : Responsible for assisting in the compliance of the Laboratory to Joint Commission, CMS and other regulating agencies requirements. Works cohesively with the Technical Laboratory Supervisors and Phlebotomy Coordinators to assure compliance of each employee.
Supplies : Assure appropriate and adequate supplies and equipment is available to clients, as well as managing limited supply inventory to ensure resource stewardship.
Department Projects : May be assigned responsibility for participating in adding and promoting additional service lines, expanding market share and improving customer and client relations.
Inventory: Assist leadership in the ordering and management of inventory for designated area.
Meetings : The Lab Assisant will attend and participate in all department meetings.
Departmental Liaison : Responsible for being a liaison between clients to ensure the best possible patient care experience.
Positive, encouraging and promotional: Responsible for always setting the example of positive interactions, encouraging actions and promoting co-workers, providers, the hospital, and the medical group.
Other duties as assigned by leadership team.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE : Must possess a working knowledge of laboratory operations through experience or education. Must have demonstrated ability to work independently, with personal initiative, to analyze and solve problems
EDUCATION : High School Minimum
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY : Must possess a valid driver's license. Certification as registered laboratory assistant or technician is preferred.
