Under regular supervision, performs responsible professional work involving the chemical, physical and bacteriological analysis of water treatment samples, distribution system samples NPDES discharge, and/or residual processes; does related work as required.

Examples of Duties:

Assists in the direction and supervision of the laboratory staff; plans and assigns daily work schedule for assistant chemist; develops and maintains standard operating procedures for sampling and analytical methods used; is capable of performing laboratory test to determine dissolved oxygen, pH, nutrients, turbidity, chlorine residual, total residue, coliform, fecal coliform, settleable/suspended solids, alkalinity, fluoride, metals analysis (by ICP-MS), total organic carbon, liquid ion chromatography and is capable of performing the more difficult and specialized laboratory tests; collects, organizes and collates data; interprets and transcribes laboratory data to permanent records; prepares routine and special reports; participates in staff training; advises supervisors on data analysis findings; prepares graphic demonstrations of data for review; performs routine mechanical maintenance on laboratory equipment or refers to proper party for repair; meets with customers to investigate water quality issues.

Typical Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree with major course work in chemistry, microbiology, biology and considerable laboratory experience in the field of water or wastewater and experience in interpreting analytical data from wastewater analysis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the principles of inorganic and organic chemistry including qualitative and quantitative analysis; knowledge of modern chemical laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment and skill in their use; general knowledge of elementary physics, physical chemistry and biochemistry; ability to prepare clear and accurate scientific reports including suitable graphic representation; ability to work effectively with others on a professional level; general knowledge of federal primary drinking water standards; ability to interact effectively with coworkers and the public. Strong computer skills and experience with LIMS (laboratory information management systems) are desired. Experience with Perkin-Elmer Labworks (LIMS), Perkin-Elmer ICP-MS, Dionex Ion Chromatography, and/or Total Organic Carbon a plus.

Supplemental Information:

Must possess a valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License.
