SALARY: $9.83 - $10.83 per hour, DOQ

HOURS: Seasonal position, March 22 – September 5, 2011. Several positions available. Shift hours will typically fall between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Shifts will be 5 – 7 hours long, 3 – 5 days per week (18 – 35 hours per week). Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as a part-time/seasonal position and is not eligible for health benefits or paid leave. Enrollment in the WA state retirement system may be mandatory. This position is an at-will position with no written or implied contractual agreement.

DUTIES: The goal of PDZA’s Education Department is to connect guests with animals and their habitats and to increase understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Interpreters will be responsible for delivering highly engaging interactive activities to guests throughout zoo and aquarium grounds. Duties include initiating interactions with zoo and aquarium guests through informal interpretive chats, focused activities, and scheduled presentations in a variety of exhibit settings, both in and outdoors. An active schedule is maintained throughout the day including standing for several hours in the sun and/or rain. Other duties as required.

Education in the natural sciences, education, theatre or related field or equivalent experience.
Experience working with children required; Experience working in an educational setting preferred.
Excellent communication and the ability to engage the public.
Customer service oriented.
Desire to work with large groups of children and adults.
Positive, cheerful and professional attitude.
Ability to work outdoors, in a variety of weather conditions and be on your feet for long shifts.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for extended periods of time; lifting and carrying boxes as needed; walking throughout the park; seeing, hearing and speaking to exchange information.
