The Impact You’ll Have at OtherInbox

The Director, Engineering and Operations is responsible for the development, delivery, support, and maintenance of OtherInbox’s products. You’ll own the engineering process to predictably develop, and maintain our products by maximizing the talent of the team. The Director is expected to regularly report on the “health” of the Product Development team via observation, data and analytics. The position reports to the CEO of OtherInbox and will work closely with Product Management, Customer Support and Marketing.

Product Development

Partner with the Business and Product Management teams to refine the vision and strategy for OtherInbox’s products.

Lead the engineering teams that maintain and build the email productivity tools of OtherInbox.

Own, review and manage sprint planning in collaboration with executive staff and Product Managers.

Show strong focus and deliver incremental milestones with demonstrable value.

Track and report on the key performance indicators related to the schedule and scope of development projects.

Provide thought leadership to the team on industry direction and best practices in technology.

Champion the lean development process.

Provide regular high-level communications to executive staff and represent the development teams company wide.

People Management

Inspire and maintain a positive atmosphere of innovation and success across a diverse team of engineers and designers.

Ensure that the roles on the team are clearly defined, the expectation of the roles are clearly articulated.

Actively manage the team such that they are performing to their full potential.

Operational Management

Track and manage operational costs.

Identify and report on the key performance indicators related to service delivery.

Recommend technology and process improvements to reduce costs.

What does it take to be successful in this role?

At least five years development management or equivalent experience.

Experience with delivering SaaS (cloud based) consumer products.

Successful experience working in a hands-on, fast-paced, creative entrepreneurial environment in a cross-functional capacity.

Experience as an effective coach, motivator and manager of diverse people.

First-hand experience bringing products to market in early stage companies.

Experience scaling products to support millions of users.

Technical programming experience and skills (e.g., IMAP, Ruby on Rails, OAuth, Hadoop).

Experience working on large data problems.

Strong analytic and strategic thinking skills, plus the ability to function on a tactical level as needed.

Results-oriented, high-energy self-starter with great interpersonal skills.

Comfortable owning a project and wearing many hats to get the job done.

Role-Specific Competencies

Software Design and Development: Takes initiative to collaborate with other members of the development team to design, develop and assure the quality of OtherInbox’s products.

Planning: Plan product initiatives in collaboration with other cross functional team managers, including, estimating the demand for product initiatives, and mapping the Development team capacity, skill, and technical infrastructure to product initiative demand on several time horizons (e.g. long term roadmap, medium term initiative, and short term iteration). Track the execution of initiatives to the plans and take effective action when they are not in alignment.

People: Ensure there is a good cultural and role fit for each person on the team and take corrective action when there is not a fit. Ensure that each OtherInbox product has sufficient knowledgeable and skilled staff to provide software production support. Identify and report on “people” metrics.

Process : Work in collaboration with other cross functional managers to develop, articulate, advocate, review, and tune lean processes to develop, deliver, support, and maintain products. In devising and operating the processes, the Director might consider factors including, but not limited to, products’ life cycle phase, maturity, usage, and market. Identify and report on metrics characterizing the “health” of the product development process.

Technical Infrastructure: Empowered and responsible for acquiring and managing the technical infrastructure resources to support the development, testing, deployment and operation of OtherInbox products.

Values and Culture: Assess, articulate, advocate, and coach direct reports to the values that will promote a culture that results in effective and efficient development, delivery, support, and maintenance of products. It is essential for the Director to establish and maintain a Development team culture of alignment with cross functional roles under the Product Development and Operations umbrella within OtherInbox as well as Return Path as a whole. This might include, but is not limited to, having shared values and goals with other functional teams.
