Normally works a five-day week, but may be required to work occasional weekends, holidays, or extended workdays.

Work is performed in a laboratory where adequate ventilation and fume hoods are available for use while working with hazardous and dangerous chemicals. The work may involve regular and recurring exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as infectious agents, carcinogens, corrosive and flammable chemicals, and low level radiation. Other hazards are electrical equipment, open flames and sharp objects (scalpels, knives and micro tome blades.). Moving expenses will not be provided.

This position will be filled at the GS-7 level, with promotion potential to the GS-8 level. At the GS-7 level, duties will be performed in a developmental capacity under close supervision.

You will serve as a histotechnologist who provides all histological preparations required discerning the nature & extent of disease in surgical & autopsy specimens from surgery, clinics & autopsy service at Tripler Army Medical Center & other institutions supported by TAMC. You will work in the histology section of a large clinical lab. You will identify, accessions, fixates, processes all tissue specimens. Processes & prepares special surgical specimens for study by a pathologist. Operates, maintains, troubleshoots & adjusts or repairs cryostats. Performs cryotomy & must maintain a skill level sufficient to cut frozen section slides. Performs a full range of duties involved in special processing & staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain & lymph nodes. Performs a wide variety of special stains demonstrating microorganisms, anatomical characteristics, carbohydrates and amyloidal, pigments, minerals & cytoplasmic granules & enzyme histochemistry.

General Schedule
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-06 equivalent) requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which involves: assisting with processing pathology specimens to include body fluids and tissue, assisting in determining proper methods in preparing and examining slides, and assisting in the performing of quality control procedures.
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One full year of Graduate Experience in a field directly related to position meets the requirement for the GS-07 level.
