The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute ( www.umtri.umich.edu/news.php ) is a global leader in conducting research and development that address technological and behavioral issues in the safety and sustainability of surface motor vehicle transportation. UMTRI is also committed to conducting interdisciplinary research that will further transportation systems knowledge and thereby advance transportation safety, mobility, and sustainability. A newly developed 5-year strategic plan approaches motor vehicle fatalities and injuries as one of the nations most pressing public health problems and sets out to advance the sciences of crash avoidance and occupant protection. The approach to research taken by UMTRI is reflected in the great variety of disciplines represented by UMTRIs research faculty and by their involvement with faculty in academic units throughout the University of Michigan and at other universities, and with key personnel in the automotive industry and government agencies.
Applications are invited to fill research faculty positions with UMTRIs Biosciences Group. One or more applicants are sought who qualify for the rank of Assistant or Associate Research Scientist. The successful candidate(s) will conduct automotive biomechanics research across multiple areas of research, including laboratory impact/injury biomechanics, human modeling, driver and passenger ergonomics, and crash-dummy development. The responsibilities of the position include collaborating with faculty, staff, and students on research projects, initiating research projects and programs by soliciting and obtaining funding, interacting with sponsors and external collaborators, writing technical reports, conference papers, and journal articles, and presenting at conferences and technical meetings.
The positions require a Ph.D. in engineering or the physical sciences. Experience with automotive injury biomechanics and/or physical ergonomics research is highly desirable. Candidates at the Assistant Research Scientist level will have demonstrated the potential for scholarly research, possibly as part of a larger research program, and will have a record of peer-reviewed publications and participation in relevant academic or professional meetings. In addition to these qualifications, candidates for the Associate Research Scientist level will have demonstrated a strong national, and a growing international, scholarly reputation on the basis of research productivity and contributions over several years.
