About the Work Unit:
This positions is part of the Engineering Section Denver Field Unit 1 which is responsible for addressing for the public, governmental entities, the regulated community, and the Department, technical and regulatory issues primarily related to compliance assistance and compliance assurance for drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities (and other discharging facilities) including the following activities: water and wastewater engineering plan review and approval; compliance evaluation inspections and sanitary surveys; vulnerability assessment-related monitoring waivers; technical and compliance assistance; spill response; regulation and policy development, and provision of technical services in support of the Division's programs to provide financial assistance for drinking water and wastewater treatment facility construction.
DUTIES: The District Engineer position conducts a variety of engineering activities primarily related to compliance assistance and assurance for drinking water and industrial and domestic wastewater treatment facilities. Specific duties include, but are not limited to water and wastewater engineering plan review and approval; wastewater treatment facility site application review and approval; inspections of drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities; response to public inquiries regarding water and wastewater regulations and policies; provide technical assistance to drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities; and provision of technical services in support of the program to provide financial assistance for drinking water and wastewater treatment facility construction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Current registration as a professional engineer issued or recognized as equivalent by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers or able to obtain reciprocity within 6 months of hire/appointment
AND two (2) years of professional experience at the Engineer-In-Training level that includes specific experience related to drinking water or wastewater treatment.
Must possess and retain a valid State of Colorado driver’s license and be able and willing to travel in-state approximately 25% of the time for an average of 80 miles in a day. Travel, using a State vehicle, is necessary to conduct field inspections.
Additionally, this position will be tasked with on-call responsibilities to respond to emergencies affecting water quality and/or the safety of public drinking water supplies.
This position can be physically demanding, requiring climbing, balancing, kneeling, walking on uneven surfaces and reaching when inspecting facilities. Candidates must be able to withstand long days, strong odors, and wear protective equipment.

- Demonstrated experience designing and constructing Industrial or Domestic Wastewater or Drinking Water Treatment Facilities
- Operational experience and/or knowledge with regard to Industrial or Domestic Wastewater or Drinking Water Treatment Facilities
- Familiarity with Colorado’s design criteria for drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with federal and Colorado Drinking Water and Wastewater Regulations,
- Experience with Regulatory Compliance Inspections of Drinking Water (sanitary surveys) and/or Wastewater Facilities (CEIs)
- Familiarity with state (Colorado) and federal requirements regarding the collection and handling of compliance samples for wastewater and/or drinking water
