The Resident Director at Calvin College is responsible for promoting student learning through the organization, supervision, and direction of an individual residence hall, and through collaboration with other Resident Directors as part of the Residence Life Department. In line with the mission and learning outcomes of the department, the R.D. works to create and maintain an environment which challenges and supports students in their learning and living. The work within a residence hall finds its embodiment in several broad areas: supervision of student staff and leaders, engagement with general residents, and general administration of the hall.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Provide overall leadership, development and supervision for residence hall student leaders by recruiting, selecting, training and supervising; mentoring RA staff by conducting individual and group meetings; and providing ongoing training and leadership development opportunities to support individual growth and ensure community development of the residence halls. Facilitate educational programming for residence hall students by creating, planning and implementing co-curricular learning through programs, events, individual contact, and conversations with students, thus facilitating student learning outside of the classroom.
Oversee student discipline by using intervention techniques, reporting incidents conducting disciplinary hearings, promoting student accountability for actions, and maintaining administrative records to facilitate student learning and maintain an orderly life on campus. Work on student retention projects through collaboration with Academic Services, parental contact, monitoring health concerns, facilitating roommate negotiations, and offering informal counseling to students to contribute to their success and growth. Provide overall management of the residence hall complex by attending residence director and student life division meetings, monitoring residence hall maintenance and cleanliness, performing student housing assignment duties and administering records and files to maintain operational efficiency of the residence halls. Demonstrate an active and integrated Christian commitment, support for the Reformed mission and vision of the institution, a commitment to professional development, and a collaborative spirit with colleagues from within the Student Life Division and beyond.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for supervising 6 to 10 Resident Assistants (RA), 15-20 student leaders in various other unpaid positions and 8-10 desk staff.
