Works with students individually or in groups to review principles, solve problems, review tests, go over writing strategies for essays and research papers, and help students develop a variety of study strategies. Helps to create and facilitate supplemental instruction workshops to develop writing, math, word processing, studying and other academic skills. Additionally, the position requires the individual to assist students who are taking courses that have an emphasis on writing. These include, but are not limited to, the Social/Behavioral Sciences, Humanities and more. Works with support staff to provide and promote a fun, safe and positive study environment. Maintains and updates confidential records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained.
One to two years full time college experience; at least one year of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Must pass English 102 with "B" or better. Must be able to communicate well with students and provide motivation and positive reinforcement. To qualify, individuals must have the ability and willingness to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds with various levels of academic preparation pursuing a variety of majors. Tutor is expected to take initiatives to sustain and improve the mission of the TRiO/SSS program. Tutor should be prepared to work with students whose first language is not English.
