Under supervision from the Custodial and/or Solid Waste Squad Leader or Supervisor, performs a wide variety of tasks; general cleaning and operating a 1 ton truck and various loading dock equipment to collect, sort, and dispose of bulk and contained, compost, universal waste and recycled materials. The work involves bending, heavy lifting, and climbing in and out of vehicles and unpleasant tasks outside in all types of weather. The work requires traveling to all the College’s facilities on and off campus and to the landfills or recycling facilities.

Recycling Duties: Collects and sorts on a daily schedule bulk and contained rubbish, compost, universal waste and recycled materials from curb side and designated sites. Determines priority of pick up, independently or in collaboration with other workers, based on the type and amount of materials at each pick up location. Makes subjective quality judgments on the characteristics of the different categories of recycled materials to result in the greater or higher value for the material to ensure proper disposal placement. Responds to emergency calls to remove materials to avoid unsightly or safety situation. Lifts and carries bulk items from facilities including basements or second floors. Identifies hazardous and bio-chemical wastes and notifies Environmental Safety and Security for proper disposal. Removes and disposes of the sorted materials (construction and demolition debris, various recycled categories, universal waste, compost, and trash) to designated secured drop off or collection points located throughout campus and two to three times a week to the Landfill or recycling facility. Records and maintains data on recycled items for accounting and financial records.
Drives a 1 ton heavy-duty stake truck with lift and dump features to pick up and transport solid waste materials. Conducts a safety check and fuels the truck. Completes regularly established schedules or responds to dispatch messages for emergency situations, driving over College or public roads. Determines the manner and sequence of loading the materials to achieve a safe and balanced load based on the category of materials being hauled. Operates a variety of loading dock equipment, such as forklift, baler, hand truck, etc. to assist in the loading of bulk or heavy materials. Maneuvers the truck through congested or narrow areas exercising caution when backing up near loading docks and other College facilities. Ensures safe operation of the lift and dump features.
Sorts recycling as assigned and performs custodial work as needed to maintain the recycling shop or storage facilities in a neat and clean manner.
Clean around dumpsters and performs other related tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

On an as needed basis: cleans public restrooms and showers; scours, disinfects, and deodorizes toilet bowls and sinks; wipes and cleans counters/vanities; polishes mirrors; replaces and stocks restroom supplies.
On an as needed basis: empties office and common area trash cans; implements FO&M recycling procedures; picks up, bags, and removes all trash inside building as well as loose trash around building perimeters to designated areas.
On an as needed basis: sweeps dirt and leaves and shovels snow from walkways and spreads sand on walkways at least 3 feet from all entrances to buildings at start of and throughout day. Sets traps to catch a variety of rodents and takes captured rodents to outside area for release. Sprays inside and outside of buildings with various chemicals to control insects.
On an as needed basis: keeps note of cleaning materials and equipment needed to do the work. Notifies Squad Leader when more materials are needed or when equipment is in need of repair or replacement. May, on occasion, act in the squad leader’s absence or assist the squad leader.
