Designs and troubleshoots telecommunications and network communications systems. Responsibilities include providing provisioning and programming of telecommunications or network equipment focused on microwave and fiber optic transport systems, remote terminal devices, switches, and routers. Specifies and orders carrier services from telecommunications providers and phone companies.
Responsibilities for this position include the following:
Design major networking or communications systems related to microwave and fiber optic transport. Create networking diagrams and implement moderately complex network programming on transport and network systems.
Serve as a consultant to other business units for solving networking or communications needs.
Serve as project engineer or lead on telecommunications transport projects or system upgrades.
Assist with systems capacity planning to manage technology changes and growth and make recommendations for approval by senior management.
Create documentation on all projects and keep documentation updated.
Write equipment specifications and purchase equipment for projects.
Design and test new telecommunications or network systems as required by the company.
Make budget recommendations for construction projects and future system requirements.
Analyze system problems and implement solutions.
Write job specifications and equipment specifications for contract jobs.
Provide technical input to assist in development of project planning.
Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Requirements for this position include:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information technology or related field or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree. A minimum of two years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
Three years of telecommunications or networking experience including design and implementation of microwave and fiber optic transport and backhaul systems.
Ability to design paths using software such as Pathloss.
Knowledge of microwave and fiber optic system design, circuit design, synchronous optical networking, time division multiplexing, T1’s, integrated services digital network, Frame Relay, and radio communication.
Knowledge of telecommunication system construction, installation, and implementation techniques and procedures.
Basic knowledge of information technology terms, equipment, systems, functions and major vendors.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Knowledge of utility practices and procedures and digital communications principles and applications
