Paraeducator -- Sign Language Translator

$15.72 hr to $19.52 hr

The Los Angeles County Office of Education is looking for qualified individuals to assist in the instruction of our deaf and hard of hearing student population (birth - 22 years of age) in special education classrooms. Under the general supervision of a certificated administrator and supervision of a teacher, the Paraeducator - Sign Language Translator uses total communication (e.g., sign language) to instruct students individually or in groups in accordance with prescribed learning objectives, and acts as a paraprofessional assistant to a teacher in performing assigned tasks.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of:
Practical learning patterns and behavior; basic characteristics of human behavior; elementary concepts of child development and behavior; basic communication skills; reading, speaking and writing in English; personal hygiene practices; basic math; principles of implementing diversity in the workplace; and laws, rules, practices and procedures related to the education program to which assigned.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:
Use total communication (e.g., sign language) continuously while performing tasks; understand and follow instructional and assessment protocol; communicate with students and staff, and motivate students to participate in learning activities; maintain emotional control under difficult situations; recognize and report safety hazards; operate computer technology and office equipment; maintain confidentiality of student information; establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff; and model communication and interaction that respects and includes all individuals and their languages, abilities, religions and cultures.

Required Education and Experience

Education : High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience : Three months of paid or volunteer experience working with people who can communicate or be communicated with only through sign language. One specialized course in sign language may be substituted for three months of paid or volunteer experience working with people who can communicate or be communicated with only through sign language*

Notes: Some positions in this classification may require the availability of private transportation; may require the ability to lift or move students who weigh up to 50 pounds; may be required to use a multi-person lift or learn the use of mechanical lifting equipment to lift or move students who may weigh in excess of 50 pounds.

Selection Process

The examination process for this classification will consist of a sign language performance examination and an oral interview. A written exam is also required for candidates who do not possess an Associates or Bachelors degree. This examination will result in one integrated eligibility list. Successful candidates are merged into the eligibility list according to their final examination score. All eligibility lists shall be established for one year or until there are fewer than three ranks of eligible candidates who are available.

Candidates who pass all exam parts are ranked according to overall exam score and placed on an eligibility (hiring) list. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Eligibility lasts for 12 months; however, additional recruitment may occur under a separate bulletin with additional candidates being merged onto the eligibility list. Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5 ). In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272). Veterans’ Credit may be awarded for entry jobs.
