Job Summary Provides delivery of Lactation Services, including providing breastfeeding assessment, plan of care, intervention, and support for mother/infant couplets. Provides access to, and instructions for the use of, breastfeeding equipment and devices, and provides referrals to healthcare providers as appropriate for follow-up. Work requires the services of a Registered Nurse who, based on training and work experience, uses considerable professional knowledge and judgment in creating plans of care, evaluating patients, and providing consultation on best practices for medications and lactation. Essential Duties Provides direct patient care for lactation consultation, including assessment, plan of care, and intervention.
Provides lactation consultation for mother/infants in Family Birth Centers, Special Care nursery, and other inpatient and outpatient clinic settings, including patient assessment and history taking, creating care plans, interventions, and coordinating with primary care providers. Problem solves challenging issues. Consults on best practices for medications and other issues for breastfeeding patients. Provides access to breastfeeding equipment and devices when appropriate to the lactating mother and breastfeeding infant.
Participates in multidisciplinary team development and collaborates with all relevant staff, including inpatient staff, MSS/WIC staff, and primary care providers, to ensure continuity of care and to provide a team approach to breastfeeding. Provides education and community outreach. Supports staff development and regional team growth by providing educational support, participating in staff meetings, and assisting with multidisciplinary team development. Acts as a liaison/representative of the Franciscan Health System and Womenâs Care Centers to care providers, community agencies, and other FHS task forces and committees, as directed by the Coordinator/Manager.
Demonstrates equipment and supplies to patients. Attends staff meetings and stays up-to-date on best practices. Serves as a community liaison for lactation services. Completes all required documentation in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner in accordance with FHS standards and procedures.
Accurately and promptly fills out documents for billing and coding purposes (i.e., Superbill). Completes patient care documentation accurately and promptly, including documentation of both the mother and babyâs chart. Assists with regional program planning and the development and implementation of guidelines and standards of care for breastfeeding mothers. Assists in the development and implementation of guidelines and standards of care for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the hospital and in outpatient settings throughout the region.
Assists in regional program planning and policy formulation within the Womenâs Care Community Services as directed by the Coordinator/Manager. Cultural Sensitivity and Competence: Demonstrates proper use of available communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services. Patient Populations Served: Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the departmentâs defined specific populations served. Performs related duties as required.
QualificationsEducation/Work Experience Requirements Associateâs degree in Nursing and four years recent related work experience involving childbearing families or maternal health nursing that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities. Bachelorâs degree in nursing preferred. License/Certification Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Washington State Board of Nursing. Current certification by International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (I.B.L.C.E.).
Current Healthcare Provider BLS Certification, or ability to be certified within 30 days of hire. Current driverâs license valid in the state of Washington or other evidence of equivalent mobility.
