Reporting to the Digital Repositories Librarian, the Research Data Librarian will participate in University Libraries efforts to map and integrate the library, its services and resources, to Virginia Tech’s research enterprise. The incumbent will split time between supporting the library’s digital services (e.g. virtual research communities, VTechWorks repository, data management) and applied research for externally funded research projects. Virginia Tech University Libraries is looking for a service oriented, energetic, motivated individual with an entrepreneurial spirit to work in a team-based environment to advance its strategic directions, goals, and objectives.
50% Participates in the Libraries’ efforts to work with Virginia Tech community members to investigate, evaluate, and support VT researchers’ data practices, processes and technologies; enable VT Libraries to support their research data management-related needs; participates in research data audits. Executes technical processes involved with managing the lifecycle of digital data sets and information objects in virtual communities and archival repositories managed by the libraries, other units on campus, and beyond VT. Investigates the use of new metadata schemas, discipline-based ontologies, and other meta-systems to manage and enable the discovery of digital resources. Assumes a leadership role in the Libraries’ implementation of appropriate metadata schemas, standards, and domain specifications for research data collections and other scholarly resources.
30% Performs data management planning with PIs and researchers, including use of data curation profiles and the DMPTool; serves as a consultant with researchers on research data issues; trains researchers on the use of digital research and publishing tools.
10% Partners with others in the Libraries, campus units, and at other universities in developing mechnologies and processes for data access and sharing, visualization, preservation, and general data management.
10% Maintains current awareness in the library profession and related fields. Serves actively on appropriate Departmental, Library, University and professional committees. Provides quality services in a professional manner with demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence and diversity and inclusion. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Required: MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent advanced degree; working knowledge of metadata for digital collections; experience with digital projects; experience with DSpace, Fedora, or other repository software; excellent communication and project management skills; ability to set priorities and make deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications: BS in a scientific field, such as physics, or biological, chemical, earth, or life sciences. Background in computer science or experience with computational methods and techniques. Working knowledge of metadata, specifically for scientific research data. Familiarity with linked open data, semantic web technologies, and exchange protocols. Record of professional involvement.
