POSITION: PBS Black Culture Connection, Digital Content Internship (SUMMER 2013)
DEPARTMENT: Digital
SALARY: $12.00/hour (undergrads and recents grads) and $15.00/hour (graduate students)
TIME COMMITTMENT : 16-24 hours/week, May 27th – August 16th, 2013

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVE:
This position will work closely with the PBS Digital Department to support a new online content vertical for Black History and Culture on pbs.org

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Maintain a content calendar of historical events and milestones in Black History in the U.S. and Abroad
Assist in writing and editing unique teasers/ stories/ copy that will excite and engage PBS online audiences in a variety of spaces– e.g. website, social media, etc.
Find and Pitch creative opportunities to market editorial copy online
Play a major role in site planning and optimizing content for Search Engines
Organize and upload content to PBS’ internal Content Management System

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with strong editorial judgment
Experience in the creation or maintenance of Web sites (either by hand or through commonly-available applications or templates) and/or publishing to blogs is preferred.
Personal participation and interest in communities/user-generated content sites is a requirement (facebook, youtube, flickr, etc);
Interest in and comfort with online video.

PREFERED EDUCATION/MAJOR/GPA:
Bachelor and/or Masters Degree Candidate in Communications, Journalism (print, broadcast and/or new media), Interactive Media, History, Black Studies (or related field of study).

OTHER DESIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/QUALITIES:
Demonstrated knowledge and interest in Black History & Culture is preferred
Self Starter, Positive Attitude
Prior work experience in an online environment a plus
Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines

SKILLS THE INTERN MIGHT GAIN:
A fundamental understanding of web development – specifically the Phases of Project Planning and Content Management
Exposure to editorial decision-making in a high-quality, new media environment
Opportunity to have work published on PBS.org
An understanding of digital marketing and promotion
An understanding of how the digital landscape is affecting the wider media industry
Broad awareness of the public broadcasting system including exposure to television and Web industry professionals and key contributors, issues and programs
