The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of conservation volunteers is seeking experienced, quality oriented outdoor leaders to supervise a team of up to 20 corps members responsible for completing habitat and cultural resource inventory and restoration projects in Idaho’s Salmon-Challis National Forest. Working in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service (AmeriCorps) SCA Idaho AmeriCorps teams will use traditional trail skills, forest inventory methods, GIS and GPS skills, hard labor, and teamwork, to complete an array of projects. Typical past projects have included studying forestry and fuel loads, rangeland management, wildlife management/biology, data collection using Trimble GPS units, and trail construction and maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities:

Crew Manager
  • Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
  • Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, vehicles
  • Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
  • Assist and train corps members in kitchen duties
Technical Advisor
  • Supervise and assist the training of corps members
  • Manage the quality & technique of trail work performed
  • Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
  • Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential
Partnership Representative
  • Manage relationship with agency partners
  • Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
  • Ensure successful and timely completion of work projects
Program Administrator
  • Assist SCA Program Manager to complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Assist SCA Program Manager in budget management and reconciliation
  • Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
  • Represent SCA and the Salmon-Challis National Forest in a positive and professional manner
Qualifications
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Previous fieldwork experience and the knowledge and ability to work in both wilderness and non-wilderness settings
  • Able to manage data using Arc GIS for resource projects
  • Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, strong work ethic are required
  • Self-starter ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and be able to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended periods of time; up to 4-10 days per hitch
  • Must have personal vehicle, mileage will be reimbursed at $0.40/mile
  • Experience managing a program budget preferred
  • Completion of an SCA Work Skills Session preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Program Dates: Positions begin April 21st and end October 26th, 2013

Compensation: Salary $540 per week, paid biweekly. Meals and housing provided. Tents and group gear provided for backcountry work projects
