Performs tree maintenance and care duties which involve the climbing, trimming, drop-crotch cutting, planting, and removal of trees and stumps.
Essential Job Functions
Climbs trees of various heights in order to trim, shape, drop-crotch cut or cut branches hazardous to public property or life.
Uses rigging equipment such as, ropes, lines, tackle and guys in climbing trees and lowering branches to the ground; applies proper slings and knots to the rigging, as needed.
Maintains public roadway and sidewalk clearance by trimming and shaping trees using various tree trimming tools such as chain saws of various sizes, pruners, pole saw, lopper, brush chipper, stump grinder, power root pruner and aerial man-lift.
Strips, fells and cuts trees into logs for disposal.
Plants and transplants trees; stakes, and root prunes, as needed.
Operates and maintains various hand and power-driven cutting tools such as axes, brush chippers, or chain saws used for the purpose of cutting branches from trees and cutting tree debris.
Operates and maintains aerial man-lift equipment.
Sharpens and maintains saws and other cutting tools used in tree trimming work.
Maintains and prepares for work such equipment as ropes, lines, tackle, guys, climbing spurs, chain saws, surgical equipment, cabling and bracing equipment.
Contacts the public to seek their assistance in removing vehicles blocking work and obtaining tree removal or planting release signatures.
Drives a small, medium or heavy size truck in transporting crews, equipment and debris to or from tree maintenance work sites, and operates power-driven booms or similar equipment on the truck.
Drives vehicles or equipment with gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, as needed.
One (1) year's experience in tree maintenance and care work.
Physical Class IV –
Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. A California Class A or B Driver License may also be required for appointment to some positions in this class.
Special Requirement Information
Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked.
AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.
This examination will consist of two (2) parts:
A qualifying performance exam consisting of inspection of safety equipment, knot tying, tree climbing (footlock or body thrust method), use of a chain saw, procedure for cutting and lowering limbs, procedure for felling a tree, and correct use of a brush chipper. Candidates passing the qualifying performance exam will proceed to Part II of the examination.
An interview weighted 100%. The interview will cover training, experience, personal fitness and general ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the interview in order to be placed on the eligible register.
FINGERPRINTING AND SECURITY CLEARANCE:
Employment is subject to security clearance which may include fingerprinting. Any false statement or omission of material fact may cause forfeiture of employment rights. Information presented on employment applications, resumes and during the examination process is subject to verification.
The eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
No person may compete for this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
