The primary role of a Histotechnologist is to register surgical specimens in the Softpath System and provide positive patient identification throughout processing. Processes, embeds, cuts and stains all surgical and autopsy tissue submitted for examination to produce quality slides for examination by the pathologists. Prepares solutions and dilutions needed for fixation, tissue processing, routine and special stains. Performs histo-chemical stains as requested. Recognizes, analyzes, and corrects problems using scientific principles. Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

Prepares solutions and dilutions needed for fixation, tissue processing, routine and special stains.
Performs histo-chemical stains as requested. Correlates reactions or results of all stains with known controls to assess procedures and reagents.
Recognizes, analyzes, and corrects problems using scientific principles.
Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Complies with established procedures and company policies.
Assists with the training of new personnel in the duties and responsibilities in the department. Evaluates progress of training. Makes recommendations on training methods and content to supervisor or manager.
Continuously assesses work processes and makes suggestions for improved work methods and ways to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems.
Monitors departmental reagent inventories. Promptly notifies appropriate person when supplies reach reorder level.
Works with supervisor or manager and other laboratory staff to plan for and accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
Promotes and supports a positive team environment in the department.
Participates in maintaining the department in technical readiness to meet the regulatory compliance standards for New York State, JCAHO, and any other regulatory agency inspecting ACM Medical Laboratory, Inc.
Documents technical competency annually. Must meet ACM’s established Continuing Education requirements.
Recognizes the need for and assumes additional bench responsibilities when scheduled or in the situation of a staffing shortage.
Assumes responsibility for channeling essential information and investigates laboratory problems as requested. Participates in scheduled departmental meetings. Communicates with external customers when presented with problems or special requests and reports them to the appropriate supervisor or manager.

BA/BS or equivalent required.
Minimum 1 year laboratory experience required.
HTL(ASCP) or BS Medical Technology with ASCP Certification required.
New York State Department of Education Licensure required.
Occasional weekends (2 hours)
Continuous standing and/or walking.
Frequent bending and twisting of neck and back, reaching below waist level or above shoulder heights, squatting, lifting/carrying items up to 50 lbs.
Occasional pushing/pulling, simple grasping of objects and fine manual dexterity for repetitive tasks (lab) and computer use.
