The Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service is seeking a Medical Technologist for the VA Medical Center, located in Durham, North Carolina. The incumbent performs as a Medical Technologist in Pathology and laboratory Medicine Service. He or she will perform complex laboratory procedures but not limited to: analyzing human blood, urine and other body fluids and tissues; recognizing deviaton from expected results; as well as analyzing and correcting problems using scientific principles. One may be involved in preparing/producing data used in detecting, diagnosing and treating disease. Incumbent will be required to function in all of section in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service; Clinical Chemistry, Hematology/Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Microbiology and Central Processing. He/she will conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products. Maintain proper records fro quality control and various other reports. Incorporates training of new employees and students in the laboratory's inservice/continuing education program.

DUTIES:
As a medical technologist (Microbiology Section) you will be required to operate, calibrate, perform preventive maintenance on and trouble-shoot various laboratory instruments and procedures. One will be required to communicate orally and in writing with people of divergent backgrounds. Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technician occupation. In addition, performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis taking into account physiologic processes and requirements. Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment. Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction. Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement. Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace.
Tour of Duty: Tour of duty will be 7:00-4:00 weekdays and rotation of weekends and Holidays.

GS-9-In addition to the basic requirements: Appointment or promotion to the GS-9 level requires a bachelors degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science or in a related science and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Both the education and the clinical practice program must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program of study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree.
Experience. C ompletion of 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. OR, Education Must have 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a masters degree in medical technology or directly related field, or equivalent graduate degree provided the applicants total background demonstrates the core competencies for GS-9 level assignment.
