We plan to invest heavily over the coming years to position GE for long-term growth, by helping our customers win with more productivity solutions, remote monitoring and diagnostics capabilities and offerings that maximize the efficiency, quality and safety of GE's industrial equipment. Essential Responsibilities
As General Counsel at the Global Software Headquarters, you will develop and implement the legal vision to enable the execution of this critical corporate intiative in an effective and compliant manner. You will support senior management, functions, and technical staff with respect to legal matters related to all aspects of the establishment and operation of the Global Software Headquarters and further work with all GE businesses and key third party partners to establish the legal infrastructure for GE's role in the industrial intranet.
Responsibilities will include: managing all legal matters related to the site; implementing and managing intellectual property strategies for the Software Center of Excellence in collaboration with scientists and IP professionals, including identification and procurement of appropriate IP protection for the Center’s work product; developing and implementing the legal structure for effective partnering with GE business and GE customers and vendors;. You will also be responsible for establishing fully compliant operations at the Software Center of Excellence.
Work with GE business and legal leadership to address effective critical legal strategies to enable fulfillment of the Center’s mission; manage legal issues relating to the development and operation of the Global Software Headquarters.
Provide leadership and legal/risk mitigation advice to multi-functional teams on various matters, such as EHS, security, government compliance, finance, immigration, export control, labor and employment matters, privacy and regulatory issues.
Work with members of the IP legal team to manage a substantial GE IP portfolio in the software technology area.
Draft and negotiate various research agreements and contract transactions in the software technology area.
Advise and counsel leaders of the Global Software Headquarters on defining and executing IP strategies.
Work with various GE business Senior IP Counsel organizations.
Communicate between GE Global Research and the GE businesses to achieve optimum protection of Global Research software innovations that have the most significant impact on the GE businesses.
Lead and participate in various GE Global Research Legal and GE improvement projects to improve the quality and efficiency of IP processes, including developing relevant metrics and data relating to the quality and effectiveness of IP processes.
Maintain and manage an environment to ensure compliance with company policies. Qualifications/Requirements
A law degree from an accredited US Law School.
Admission to at least one state bar or the D.C. bar.
At least eight (8) years experience of practice in the legal fields of relating to development and use of software, including demonstrated significant experience in software-related intellectual property issues.
Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional business and legal teams in addressing and resolving IP issues.
Demonstrated experience in handling sophisticated commercial transactions and developing strategic and innovative plans for collaboration with key business partners.
Experience in handling a broad spectrum of IP matters including managing patent portfolios; experience drafting and negotiating IP agreements; proactive identification of IP infringement risks and avoidance of claims of third parties.
Demonstrated experience in developing and managing operating budgets.
Demonstrated initiative, integrity and professionalism in legal matters.

Must be willing to work out of an office located in San Ramon, CA.

Significant experience and demonstrated sound judgment in handling a broad spectrum of IP matters such as creating and enforcing portfolios of world wide intellectual property rights including patent portfolios; experience drafting and negotiating IP licenses and agreements; proactive identification of IP infringement risks and avoidance of claims of third parties; in and out licensing of IP rights.
Licensing and enforcement experience.
History of participation and leadership in professional associations and bar activities.
Strong teamwork skills.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels of management.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and produce a high quality product.
Ability to train less experienced attorneys.
Proven and excellent leadership abilities.
Membership in the California bar
