We are presently seeking a highly motivated Engineering Manager to play a key role in the realization of our strategic vision and projecting AST’s technical expertise into new markets. Come join our Engineering team in our Montville, New Jersey facility. This contemporary facility is our corporate headquarters and contains a state of the art Engineering Laboratory and our Custom Bearing Lubrication Center, complete with clean rooms and proprietary cleaning and dispensing equipment. Primary Responsibilities:
Manage and direct all aspects of the Engineering function. These include Applications and Technical Support, Design Projects, Assembly Area and Tool Room Operations, and the Engineering Laboratory.
Work in conjunction with the Chief Engineer to establish technical direction and protocols for Engineering services and activities. Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures as needed.
Manage and supervise staff of Engineering personnel. This includes training, career development, establishing goals and objectives, inter-departmental communication, and annual employee reviews.
Manage configuration control for applicable products, responsible for publication of all technical documents, and CAD software/system management. Use department resources to develop technical content for website and on-line catalog.
Manage all aspects of Precision Mechanical Assembly product line and operations, including - design, product development, estimating, purchasing, preparation of budgets and operation sheets, development of assembly tooling and gauging, and production scheduling. Assist with development of Sales and Marketing strategies.
Some travel is required, including international.
Typical Activities within the Department include:
Provide bearing expertise to answer customer technical questions and create solutions for existing and new applications.

Directly interface with customers to detail the technical requirements of their applications, including proper materials and lubricants, precision levels, fitting practices, and design of mating components and hardware. Focus on customer needs and service. Develop strong relationships with customer engineering and technical personnel.

Recommend appropriate designs to meet performance and life requirements, including the design of special bearings. Use our custom software package to calculate static and dynamic load ratings in accordance with ISO, DIN, or ABMA standards. Provide supporting bearing calculations, such as L10 life, stiffness and deflection, and preload.

Using the resources of the Engineering Laboratory conduct failure and post service analysis of field return bearings. Become proficient at operating noise and vibration analysis equipment, torque testing, raceway curvature tracing, air gages, and ring geometry form scanning. Prepare detailed written reports for customers and Sales with recommendations for design changes or enhancements.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are a must.
  • 10+ years work experience in the bearing, or motion control industry; experience in an ISO-9000 or AS9100 environment is a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office required.
  • Proficiency in Solid Works, or other CAD experience.
  • Passionate, motivated and driven to meet objectives. Ability to maintain a high energy level and multi task in a fast paced environment.
  • Resourceful and adaptive with the ability to find ways around obstacles or develop new approaches and/or methods.
  • Organized and disciplined with time management skills.
