Family Law CASA of King County Program Attorney
FLC has an excellent opportunity for a family law attorney, comfortable with litigation, who possesses solid experience focused on child custody matters and who will represent the program and its volunteers. The program attorney appears at all trials and hearings for the purpose of representing the volunteer advocate and defending their report in court. Experience with family law motions is required and familiarity with GAL rules is preferred. Settlement conferences and mediations are sometimes coordinated through the program attorney as well. The program attorney supervises and is supported by a full-time paralegal and 2 contract attorneys. The program attorney may utilize interns according to their preference.
The program attorney is an integral part of the overall program, providing legal guidance to 3 advocate supervisors. The program generally has 90 – 100 open cases at various stages of litigation. The program attorney reads appointments from the court and reviews/edits advocate reports for distribution to parties and the court. The program attorney reviews and signs or seeks changes in all agreed orders in open cases and is responsible for drafting orders in hearings, drafting parenting plans for trial and drafting post-trial orders in accordance with court rulings. The program attorney must keep memoranda of law and practice templates updated and remain current on developing case law and must comply with all federal, state and local professional standards. The program attorney also participates in training both new advocates and ongoing trainings to enhance advocate skills.
Family Law CASA serves as the voice of children in court who are the subject of high-conflict custody cases. Their cases often involve allegations of domestic violence, substance abuse and mental illness. The children we serve are from low-to-moderate-income homes, and more than half are six years old or younger. The program attorney should have insight about the intersection of law and social work and be able to communicate in a positive manner with social workers, volunteers and the community.
Salary DOQ. Paid medical, dental and vision insurance; standard paid holidays; paid vacation leave; paid sick leave; employer contribution retirement plan and paid parking or transit pass. This is an exempt salaried position (no billable hours). Family Law CASA does not discriminate and offers a positive work environment. To apply, please submit resume and cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org .
