This is a restricted position and continued employment is dependent on funding. The College of William & Mary invites applicants for the position of Lab & Research Specialist I to provide the necessary support and expertise at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for estuarine fish surveys (field sampling, data entry and analysis, and laboratory tasks) and specific concerns (such as ageing studies and data analysis). The successful candidate will drive a VIMS vehicle to and from sampling sites. Work should be completed on a semi-independent basis, with work discussed periodically with supervisor and P.I.s to insure agreement and progress being made. This position requires heavy lifting.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of fisheries, biology, sampling techniques and general scientific principles. Knowledge of Chesapeake Bay fishes and ability to identify fish (especially juvenile stages). Ability to work under physically demanding circumstances, in occasionally harsh environmental conditions, and be able to swim and resist motion sickness. Demonstrated working knowledge of computers to include word processing, presentation software and spreadsheets. Excellent organization, time management and effective communication skills both orally and written. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. High School Diploma or equivalent with demonstrable experience in Marine Science, Oceanography or closely related field.(This experience must be from aquatic field sampling using standard fishery techniques as applied in the field and lab. Experience with boats and be certified to operate small vessels at VIMS, or obtain certification within 3 months of employment. Demonstrated experience with word processing, presentation software and spreadsheets. Able to lift to 50lbs as required to perform the essential functions.

Preferred Qualifications

B.S. degree in marine science, fisheries science, oceanography or closely related field with demonstrated experience conducting fisheries sampling from large and small vessels engaged in survey work is highly preferred. Working knowledge level proficiency with MS suite (Word, Powerpoint and Excel).
