The UW Laboratory Medicine department - Seattle Cancer Care Alliance site has an outstanding promotional opportunity for a full-time CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN LEAD. The successful candidate will be part of a skilled and dedicated team in a state-of-the-art hematopathology laboratory. Their duties and tasks provide vital support to the technologists, residents, fellows and hematopathologists in the laboratory. Their schedule includes rotations both at UWMC and SCCA. This Lead Technician will supervise, organize and monitor activities of CLT1s and CLT2s and interact with other leads, handling CT2s, and manager. This individual acts as the client service liaison between laboratory and clients, outside agencies, internal departments and medical staff, particularly with regard to obtaining outside materials and specimen handling. The lead ensures that assigned areas are covered and as needed, performs at a technical level, various routine laboratory tests, and/or other laboratory processing and set up work which supports the operation of the flow cytometry, molecular, bone marrow, and morphology services of the clinical Hematopathology laboratory. The Lead may contribute to updating established processes and procedures and to the development and evaluation of new ones.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
Oversee and perform at a technical level, various procedures / tasks supporting the operation of the flow cytometry, bone marrow, and molecular sections of the Hematopathology laboratory.
Serve as client services liason between the laboratory and clients, outside agencies, internal departments and medical staff performing critical tasks related to specimen and materials management for the UW Hematopathology lab.
Regularly assigns, instructs, and checks the work of CLT1 and CLT2;
Provides input to the supervisor and/or manager on employee performance;
Participates in the interview process, orientation, and training for new staff;
Coordinates staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for CLT benches;
Communicates with lead and CT2 if additional help is needed in areas;
Accessions and manages clinical and research materials;
Manages encounter number requests for consults;
Maintains competency and perform job duties of a CLT1/CLT2 when needed;
Performs daily processing/tracking of consult, referral, and additional testing material and maintaining tracking documenation in Powertrax (Powerpath);
Works efficiently with Hematopathology team by responding to requests for information pertaining to reports, slides, and blocks from inside and outside of the hospital;
Locates, delivers, and retrieves materials and paperwork in a timely manner;
Confers with clients, outside agencies, internal departments and medical staff regarding the ordering, compiling, organizing, tracking, distributing, and delivery of materials;
Compiles, catalogues and organizes information and materials for conferences.

An Associate Degree from an NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology AND one year of Clinical Laboratory Technician experience

OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Departmental Requirement

Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Candidates with associate degrees in the sciences with emphasis in chemistry and biology and an additional two years clinical lab experience or bachelor's degrees in the sciences such as biochemistry, molecular or cellular biology would be competitive for this position with one year clinical lab experience.

Knowledge or experience with data entry systems such as PowerPath, Hematopathology database and Laboratory Medicine LIS.

Knowledge or experience with handling and tracking of consult, referral, and additional testing materials and maintaining tracking documentation in Powertrax.

Knowledge or experience with molecular testing, procedures and techniques including DNA and RNA extraction, qualitative and quantitabive PCR, and agarose and capillary electophoresis.

Knowledge or experience with assisting at bone marrow procedures. Experienced at processing specimens obtained during bone marrow procedures.

Condition of Employment:
The primary work locations are the Department of Laboratory Medicine's Hematopathology Laboratory in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance building on SE Lake Union, with possible coverage at UWMC, dependent on staffing needs.

Employees working in Laboratory Medicine may be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer REsearch Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, Rosen, etc.
