Position Summary

CoGe (http://genomevolution.org) is a web-based scientific platform for comparing genomes and related data. It currently stores nearly all assembled genomes and associated metadata publicly available, and many private genomes for individual scientists and research groups. CoGe is built using an extended LAMP stack with heavy use of data intensive visualization and interactive web components including JavaScript, jQuery, and ajax. In addition, CoGe makes heavy use of the iPlant Collaborative' s cyberinfrastructure for additional extensibility, scalability, and reliability including high performance, cloud, and distributed computing and data storage. We are seeking a talented Application Programmer to join the CoGe development team in a part-time position (50-75%) to develop extensions to CoGe for visual analytics and backend improvements to its job execution framework. This will require learning and deploying high-performance computing systems developed by the iPlant Collaborative. CoGe's team is co-located with the iPlant, where you will work with other software engineers, computer scientists, test engineers and project managers to develop creative software solutions. This position requires developing innovative, open source web applications. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement software according to the project requirements, specifications, and timelines. *Contribute to the development of professional processes, procedures, and standards for delivering quality products in a timely fashion. *Work within established development standards and methodologies, including agile development, pair programming, and test- and behavior-driven development. *Work with other software engineers and developers to document and promote best practices and patterns. *Work with a team of developers or alone to evaluate/research current and new software development technologies, such as programming languages, application platforms, libraries, and data storage systems.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Two years of computer programming experience; OR, Associate's degree in Computer Science or related field AND one year of computer programming experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • A combined three years of related education or experience. *Experience with the iPlant Collaborative cyberinfrastructure platform. *Experience with relational databases (especially MySQL or PostgreSQL). *Experience with programming in languages (especially Python or Perl). *Experience with web-based application development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery). *Experience with statistics, statistical packages, and data visualization. *Experience with Linux and web server administration (especially Apache HTTP server). *Experience working in a team environment on successful software projects. *Exposure to many phases of the software development/implementation life cycle.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; OR Near completion of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science; or related field AND one year of Application Programming experience. *Experience in developing web-based systems. *Experience with data visualization. *Experience with a distributed version control system, such as Git or SVN. *Experience using and/or contributing to open source software. *Experience producing robust software, preferably in the scientific computing domain. *Familiarity with scaling Internet applications. *Familiarity with distributed computing environments. *Experience developing rich Internet applications, either with AJAX or any JavaScript frameworks such as jQuery.
