This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by planning and facilitating outreach programs in designated communities in the Chicagoland area to support the Society's mission of inspiring conservation leadership and to ensure that the CZS mission is relevant to all audiences. Develop, prepare and implement programs within designated Chicagoland communities to reach underserved audiences. These programs include off-site workshops, staffing outreach booths and related activities, field trips, special programs and other activities for families and youth. Develop and maintain relationships with program participants and their families.
Ensure program materials and communication tools are culturally sensitive and relevant for CZS. Assist with other community relations department projects and other projects and related duties as assigned. Minimum Associates Degree or equivalent combination of training and/or experience in education, science, communications, social services or other related field required. Minimum 1 year experience working with community outreach programs required.
Not-for-profit experience preferred. Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills. Good written/composition, verbal communication skills, and effective listening skills required. English fluency required.
Excellent telephone etiquette. Computer proficiency required, including Microsoft Windows, MS Word. Experience with MS Excel preferred. Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience and wide range of constituencies.
Experience working within urban communities required. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and the general public. Strong customer service skills required. Good organization skills and attention to detail required.
A genuine interest in science and nature and a desire to share this passion through innovative children and family programs required. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team, as well as independently. Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
Multi-lingual ability and Spanish fluency a plus. Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.
Starting salary: $13.65 per hour.
