The PBX Operator relays incoming and outgoing calls routed through the switchboard, overheard pages and pagers. Monitors fire and other alarms. Releases patient condition according to hospital policy and distributes reports or copies accordingly. Must be able to communicate with security and maintenance on hand-held radio. Participates in Performance Improvement activities to assure continuous Quality Improvement. Maintains cultural and diversity awareness when dealing with patients, visitors, co-workers and all other customers. Promotes a supportive, team-work oriented environment. Fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long-range plan, mission, vision and values of Horizon.
High school graduate or equivalent. Hospital experience with public communication preferred.
Demonstrates the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Validation Checklist(s). Meets mutual agreed upon performance goals/objectives as listed on the Performance Management Plan (PMP).
Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances (accident, injuries, and illness). Can not leave work area without back up. Subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. Must be flexible, work at a fast pace and manage several projects at a time. Frequent interdisciplinary contact with other departments and health care professionals. Will be required to work weekday, weekends and holidays. During low census, staff may be required to leave early and rotate days off.
Potential prolonged sitting. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and/or crouching. May lift or push supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 lbs from locations at or above shoulder level, required to obtain assistance for lifting more than 25 pounds. Must be able to use proper body mechanics while moving and lifting. Hearing capability ranging from understanding a whispered command to withstand loud equipment/alarm noises.
DEGREE OF SUPERVISION
Minimal - must be able to work independently
- Experience in customer service position.
- Previous PBX experience is desirable.
- Ability to fluently speak and understand English.
- Previous experience in hospital setting preferred.
- Ability to perform calmly, competently and quickly in emergency situations.
- Customer service abilities.
- Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching and some lifting.
