A Transportation Clerk performs a variety of duties ranging from preparing switching orders, receiving and disbursing funds, computing rates and charges, preparing billing documents, scheduling crews, and maintaining a variety of records. Work assignments are determined by a unionized, seniority and qualification based system. AN IRREGULAR OR ON-CALL WORK SCHEDULE INCLUDING NIGHTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS FOR NEW EMPLOYEES IS PROBABLE. Transportation Clerks are generally responsible for: preparing data using computer terminals; preparing information such as shipping charges, weights, railroad car assignments, routing directions, and specialized instructions; notifying train members, crews, and other clerks to report for duty; recording, maintaining, and providing train arrival, departure, and other related information; inspecting and verifying freight car and intermodal equipment identities, contents, weights, and destinations; communicating train orders, movement instructions, and other information; operating vehicles and a variety of remote control devices; possibly supervising and coordinating the work of other clerks; and performing other essential functions as assigned. Qualifications Requires minimum education of a high school diploma or GED, current and valid driver’s license and computer experience. Preferred experience includes knowledge and education in transportation operations. Job Requirements Mental: A clerk is required to follow company safety procedures, use common sense, and maintain an overall level of safety awareness in the work environment. Must be able to understand and provide written and oral communications. Physical: A clerk should possess good eye-hand coordination, and a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute. Distant visual acuity must be at least 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses. An average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40 decibels or less at 500 HZ, 1000 HZ and 2000 HZ, aided or unaided, is required. Other Relevant Information The clerk's work schedule may be irregular with possible overtime, and may includes day and night hours, weekend or holiday work hours including working on an on-call schedule. Meal times may vary. Work may be performed in an office environment and/or out-of-doors. At times, the job may require prolonged sitting, typing, monitoring of a screen, lifting, etc.
