Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located in the states of North Carolina and Tennessee and encompasses 800 square miles of which 95 percent are forested. The headquarters is located near the city of Gatlinburg, TN. There are 16 peaks over 6,000’ in elevation and up to 90” of rainfall spread throughout the year. The Park has 10 campgrounds, 800 miles of horse and hiking trails, and 750 miles of fishable streams. The Smokies is within one day’s drive for about 1/3 of the U.S. population and thus attracts 9 to 10 million visitors annually; making it the most visited, national park in the system. Climate is moderate with average lows in the summer in the 60’s and highs in the 80’s and 90’s and average lows in winter between 20 and 30 with highs in the 50’s. Snowfall averages range from 5” in Gatlinburg, TN, to 11” in Bryson City, NC.

DUTIES:
Performs a variety of duties of a general nature in the routine operation of campgrounds, picnic areas, visitor centers, other park facilities and grounds such as litter removal, minor maintenance and cleaning of signs, painting of trash cans, trimming of trees and brush. Will assist in flagging operations, patching operations, cleaning of ditches and culverts. Washes exterior of buildings, signs and other structures using high pressure washers. Performs general landscaping and grounds maintenance such as mowing with push and riding mowers, uses weed eaters and pruner for trimming, planting of shrubs, trees, grass, spreading of fertilizer and mulch. Loads and unloads trucks and other conveyances. Required to render moderate to heavy assistance at times to other buildings operations, roads and other divisions during emergency situations. Frequently required to lift and move objects over 50 pounds, and in some case, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
In order to successfully perform the duties of the position, the Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118C) requires that applicants possess a minimum acceptable level of knowledge, skill, and ability in specific job elements. This statement is designed to assess the degree to which your experience and/or training meet the qualification requirements. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) iwth assistance.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

Selection for this position is subject to a favorable background investigation to determine suitability for Federal Service.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Category rating procedures will be used to rate and rank candidates. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories: Best qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. This evaluation determines which candidates will be referred to the selecting official for final consideration. Order for Consideration: All qualified applicants entitled to veterans’ preference who have a compensable service-connected disability of 10% or more will be added to the Best Qualified category. (1)Best qualified applicants entitled to veterans’ preference, then all other best qualified applicants. (2) Well qualified applicants entitled to veterans’ preference, then all other well qualified applicants. (3) Qualified applicants entitled to veterans’ preference, then all other qualified applicants.

Only education and experience acquired by the filing deadline will be considered.
