JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, provides basic patient care to all patients including those in isolation. Provides age specific assistance, with activities of daily living and therapeutic measures that will result in a lower level of agitation or higher level of comfort for the patient.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Provides basic patient care, including hygiene, preventive skin care, incontinence care, feeding, mobility, range of motion and application of safety measures to all patients. Assists with activities of daily living. Obtains vital signs, temperature, heights, girth measurements, or other specific parameters as directed. Documents findings on appropriate flow sheet and reports findings to the Registered Nurse (RN). Identifies and reports changes in patient status to the RN.

Performs patient treatments as directed such as application of heat or cold, sterile dressings, monitors intakes and outputs, incentive spirometry. Maintains calorie count. Provides ostomy care, post-mortem care, care of indwelling urinary catheters, care of the patient in traction, pin care, oral suctioning. Assists with suctioning chronic patients with tracheotomies and assists with long term permanent placed feeding tubes (not nasal tubes.).

Performs a variety of technical tasks, which may include: collecting preparing and transporting specimens to the laboratory, aseptic preparation of lines or equipment (i.e. IV infusions, infusion pumps, pleurovac set-up; discontinuing peripheral IV's. wound dressings; catheterization of urinary bladder; removal of urinary catheter, bowel care; electrocardiogram's; phlebotomy; traction frame set-up; cast care; application of external monitoring devices; performs tests for accucheck blood sugar levels. Documents and reports results to the RN.

Initiates CPR and other emergency measures as required. Adheres to established emergency and disaster procedures. Assists with patient examinations and therapeutic procedures, including aseptic procedures requiring sterile preps Transports patients and equipment as required. Maintains; cleanliness and safety of a variety of equipment, reports any hazardous equipment and seeks repairs when necessary, confidentiality in regard to patient care information and chart contents. Assists RN's in transcribing doctors orders. Collaborates with personnel in nursing and supportive services and with members of the health care team to promote delivery of patient care.

Performs administrative duties. Answers the phones, completes requisitions, follows up on doctors orders by transcribing medications on medication sheet, schedules tests and appointments, files reports, orders supplies and equipment and manages patients medical records, etc.

ENDOSCOPY REQUIREMENTS
Prepares and sets up Endoscopy main rooms and middle room. Prepares and presents patient for procedure along with the patient chart. Verifies patient is NPO and has taken colon prep. Checks for allergies and asks if the patient has any question regarding the procedure. Explains to the patient the procedures during procedures. Follows specific guidelines for each procedure to be performed. Maintains and prepares cart for use in the ICU or the OR. Restocks and orders supplies. Cleans Endoscopy rooms, maintains troubleshoots and sterilizes all endoscopy equipment. Sets up for field clinics, track scopes and processes on return. Works with Central Sterile Supply for special orders or ordering Endoscopy equipment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills

Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices.
Knowledge of communication skills, both oral and written to interact with patients and families.
Knowledge of various endoscopy procedures & equipment (ie: EGD, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopies, Liver Biopsies, Bronchoscopies and Peg Tube Placements).
Skill in observing patients and taking appropriate action as needed.
Skill in analyzing safety issues and preparing recommendations based on findings.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

Required Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or GED equivalent, Credentials as a Certified Nurses Assistant preferred AND Basic Life Support is required; AND one (1) year of endoscopy experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic Life Support License is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
May occasionally be exposed to hazardous conditions and infectious diseases. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule. May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations. Work is performed in a standard office environment and in a study clinic setting.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position requires the ability to sit for long period of time. The work demands long periods of walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting in the process of patient care. Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher. May be required to lift approximately 40 pounds. ANMC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
