The primary purpose of this position is to provide inspection, corrosion control, prevention and treatment of structural and ancillary components for ICBM missile sites at Malmstrom AFB, MT to include 150 Launch Facilities (LF), 15 Missile Alert Facilities (MAF) dispersed over 20,000 sq miles with one way travel distances over 150 miles.

Performs a wide variety of mechanical tasks, uses, maintains and troubleshoots, tools and specialized equipment performing maintenance on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems and components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles.

Routinely performs as Assistant Team Leader and as Team Leader as required with specific responsibilities to perform complex Nuclear Missile System site entry and exit procedures, using Missile Entry Control System (MECS) compounded with a unique Missile Electronic Encryption Device (MEED) that does not allow for error.

Prepares various surfaces of interior and exterior components of buildings and other structures performing maintenance on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems and components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicles by media blasting, mechanical and chemical removal of deteriorated coatings and corrosion, filling cracks, sanding, and applying fillers and base coats.

Mixes, thins, blends, matches, tints, and tones coating materials performing maintenance on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems and components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support Equipment/Vehicle.

Apply coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other specialized methods to include metal spray (metallization) on Nuclear Missile Weapons Systems and components on Launch Facility, Missile Alert Facilities and Missile Support equipment/Vehicles.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C; (e.g. WG-4700, General Maintenance and Operations Work Family, dated DEC 2012). Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge and ability to perform mechanical procedures, use and maintain specialized tools and equipment employing a variety of skills including pipe fitting and plumbing, electrical maintenance, component disassembly/reassembly and routine maintenance.

Use and maintain specialized testing equipment to test surface profile, confined space air sampling, coating thickness and security entry/monitoring equipment.

2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, procedures and nuclear weapons safety rules. Knowledge of electrical testing procedures and AC/DC circuitry, use of electrical test equipment, multi gas air sampling equipment and procedures.

3. Skill operating personal computers to complete training, perform equipment operation testing, required competency courses and documenting maintenance actions.

4. Knowledge of current Federal, state, local, and Air Force regulation pertaining to environmental laws and hazardous waste management.

Knowledge of accepted surface preparation and coating methods and techniques including special finishing techniques.

5. Knowledge of paints and thinning additives and skill in tinting, toning, matching, and blending coating materials.

6. Skill and ability to comprehend and apply air Force publications, technical orders and manufacturer’s instructions pertaining to nuclear missile maintenance operations for the mixing, use, and applications of coating materials.

Skill in determining the methods, techniques, devices, and materials best suited to obtain the surface condition and finish required.



Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.



This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 85) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Shift work may be required; may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, emergency overtime may be required.

A valid vehicle operator’s license is required.

If not already possessed, a class B CDL must be obtained after hire.

Required to operate government vehicles up to 32,000 GVW straight truck.

May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees.

Will be required to be certified as a Maintenance Team Chief.

Will wear respirators or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as required.

Must complete all collateral training to include but not restricted to, Missile Safety, Nuclear Surety, Personnel Reliability Program, Hazardous Waste Training and all requirements for dispatching to remote missile sites.

Will be inspected quarterly by direct observation of certified QA Evaluators on job performance and must meet the requirements for “Maintenance Evaluation Program (MEP)” and Production Inspector (PI).

Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, formaldehyde or other hazards and required annual occupational health examinations.

Must be able to Qualify with Firearms, Shotgun training.

Will be required to assist other workers in various crafts.

Dispatch to and from LFs and MAFs is required. Remain over Night (RON) at a MAF could be required resulting from inclement weather, timelines, and safety reasons.

This is a Testing Designated Position.

The employee is subject to random drug testing.

Position requires a SECRET security clearance and PERSONNEL RELIABILITY PROGRAM certification.
