Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), located in on Oahu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Performs routine laboratory tasks as well as tasks specific to fieldwork and labwork in interdisciplinary marine biogeochemistry; performs maintenance, deployment, and recovery of in situ geochemical sensors and analyzers, as well as maintenance and operation of laboratory analyzers including deionized (DI) water systems, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ion chromatography (IC), & spectrophotometry; performs Matlab analyses, and calculations and geochemical bioenergetics modeling; prepares solid-state voltammetric microelectrodes, performs electrode calibrations, analyzes voltammetric data; maintains flow-through and batch reactors for redox biogeochemistry analyses. Assists with routine laboratory safety inspections, purchasing, and file keeping.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Earth Sciences (environmental chemistry, geochemistry, oceanography). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in an active biogeochemistry laboratory, which must include preparation and participation in at least one (1) multi-day biogeochemical research cruise. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Expertise knowledge in proficiency with electrochemical methods, especially using solid-state voltammetry electrodes. Working knowledge of principles and practice of laboratory safety. Effective communication (verbal and written), organization, and human relations skills. Able to work independently, prioritize workloads to meet deadlines, anticipate problems, and work well in a diverse environment. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must possess certification to handle biological/chemical waste (or be able to obtain certificate following the training provided within two (2) months of hire). PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Ability to work effectively on research vessels for extended periods at sea.
