Position Summary

This position will assist the Lead Biomedical Informatics Research Programmer with projects involving data management and analysis for clinical research protocols within the UR Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). The position is responsible for assisting in the development of web based protocol applications, creating database applications and graphical user interfaces for capturing and reporting research data. The individual will program client/server database applications and administer the temporary relational database schemas during the application development lifecycle.

The responsibilities of this position will entail a multitude of tasks ranging from forms design, scanning and verification, database development, GUI Design, ColdFusion and PHP programming, SQL querying for the generation of project reports. Overall, this position is responsible for assisting with the conceptual design, creation, delivery, and support of Informatics applications that facilitate the strategic direction of the CTSI.

Specific Responsibilities

Programs client/server database applications with graphical user interfaces that will support the CTSI operations and deliverables. Acts as one of the liaisons to clinical investigators to both extract system requirements and also communicate project progression in relation to the programming deliverables.

Programs web-based data entry applications or reporting tools in direct support of research protocols requesting such flexible services.

Develops and administers development based databases and relational schema to support the test environment required for the successful deployment of protocol driven applications. Maintains specifications and develops operational processes for all applications supporting the different functions of the CTSI.

Responsible for the data integrity and security of all CTSI applications and the databases that support their operations. Must employ best practices and robust techniques to minimize the risk of data loss or compromised access.

Debugs and tests code classes and modules to ensure accurate operations of the application. Performs unit testing and other efficient techniques to align program results with investigator requirements.

Other duties as assigned such as providing assistance to CTSI Informatics support staff or CTSI principle investigators and their support staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in computer science, informatics or a related discipline and 2-3 years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Some experience with science/medical terminology is helpful. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and problem-solving skills are required.

Knowledge and experience with a variety of computer platforms, operating systems, and networking environments. Experience in developing applications with the following technologies is required –
  • Windows 2005/2008 and Linux Server OSes
  • IIS and Apache web servers
  • PHP and Cold Fusion markup languages
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 and MySQL
Excellent skills in communication and a firm commitment to service is necessary to work effectively in this position. Personal characteristic desired include flexibility, initiative, creativity and the ability and willingness to work in an evolving technological environment.
