Tenure-track - Spanish Assistant Professor
The Department of Modern Languages at Ursinus College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Spanish at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin August 2013. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Spanish, and a specialization in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, or pedagogy is preferred, along with a strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of language and culture. Responsibilities will include overseeing the lower-division language curriculum in Spanish, teaching Spanish courses at all levels, offering other courses in language and culture, and participating in program development in international studies. The ability to create courses and direct student research in such fields as sociolinguistics, translation, language variation, or discourse analysis is required. The successful candidate will participate in departmental initiatives with regard to program articulation at all levels, placement testing, outcomes assessment, the core language requirement, the teaching certification program, and curricular revision to incorporate interdisciplinarity in the Spanish program and collaboration with other departments. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to scholarly research, as well as a strong interest in experiential learning, including but not limited to study abroad and internships, as well as civic engagement with nearby Spanish-speaking communities. Native or near-native ability in Spanish and English is required, and the Ph.D. must be completed by the start of classes. Regular participation in the college’s interdisciplinary first-year student seminar (CIE) is expected of all faculty.
