PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide strong regional and statewide leadership in delivering research-based STEM programming in the Youth & Community Leadership capstone area. The 4-H STEM Field Specialist will develop, organize, and train volunteer groups in the establishment and enhancement of 4-H programs, school enrichment programs, and afterschool programs that get children excited about learning and practicing STEM related skills. STEM Field Specialists will travel extensively to build strong relationships with teachers, school administrators, volunteers, university faculty, and governmental agencies to identify ongoing and emerging opportunities in STEM education.
This position requires strong knowledge and experience in developing or leading learning communities; ability to conduct impact programming based on local needs assessments; commitment to the development of emerging technology materials for program development and delivery; ability to collaborate on emerging issues; and develop relationships with pertinent stakeholders. Extension Field Specialists have a responsibility to secure programmatic funding, conduct evaluation, and successfully engage with the public by bridging research to practice. Extension Field Specialists report to academic Department Heads who are located on the SDSU campus, and will work collaboratively with Extension State Specialists, and other faculty members in their respective department.
•Master’s Degree with at least one degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Technology, Engineering, or other closely related field with significant scientific course work required.
•Experience working with volunteer groups and K-12 youth.
•Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
•Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work as a team member.
•Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.
•Demonstrated ability or potential to plan, implement, and evaluate educational materials and direct effective programs.
•Valid South Dakota driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.
•Previous Extension Service experience.
•Demonstrated leadership in developing or leading learning communities.
•Demonstrated leadership and teamwork with stakeholders.
•Demonstrated collaboration in developing funding proposals to support new and/or enhanced programming.
•Experience in publishing extension materials and peer reviewed journals.
