Proto Labs is currently recruiting for a Customer Service Engineer. This position is responsible for providing technical expertise during the selling and post-sale interaction with customers by recommending design changes to 3D CAD models and providing solutions to post-sale technical issues.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Phone follow-up to customer contacts that have received quotes with required 3D CAD model changes to discuss changes to improve manufacturability.
Provide technical support for the sales process, including onsite and over the phone meetings.
Promptly and accurately address technical questions including resin, moldability and part design issues from contacts using the appropriate communication tool.
When reviewing and approving outgoing quotations, act as the primarily technical resource.
Ability to work cross-departmentally to research technical problems, determine their root causes and recommend a course of action.
Document relevant notes in the intranet and critical information in CRM.
Contribute to continuous improvement activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum 5 years successful experience working directly with end customers as part of a revenue generating team.
Formal education (BA/BS) and 2 years of experience or 7 years experience in mechanical or manufacturing engineering or related field.
Previous manufacturing engineering or technical support experience in plastic injection molding or die casting.
Solid understanding of the plastic injection molding process including an understanding of thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic resins.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to build rapport and customer trust.
Demonstrated ability to use Q&A techniques to assess a customer’s situation in order to provide relevant solutions in the form of recommended 3D CAD model changes.
Solid understanding of mechanical design and the principles of designing for injection molding.
Understands general concepts of CNC machining.
Ability to work in conjunction with a quota carrying sales team supporting the sales process.
Easily grasp the Proto Labs manufacturing and business processes.
Experience with 3D CAD modeling software, SolidWorks or equivalent is highly desired.
Familiar with Quality Control inspection techniques and documentation methods.
Proficient with measuring instruments including calipers, surface plates and height gages.
Experienced with CRM and MS Office products.
