Job Summary: Performs moderately complex to highly complex and specialized clinic laboratory tests/analyses of human blood, urine and other body fluids, tissues or substances using manual or automated techniques to obtain data for use in the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease/injury. Specific areas of accountability may include one, or a combination of, the following disciplines: transfusion service, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, immunology, toxicology and/or urinalysis. Work includes 1) pretesting and processing samples, 2) performing, analyzing, interpreting, and confirming tests 3) documenting and delivering test results and 4) operating and maintaining standard Lab instrumentation and equipment. Given the critical importance of test results to patient care and clinical outcomes, an incumbent is accountable for ensuring the accuracy of test results and related analyses based on strict adherence to established standards, procedures and regulatory requirements for test analysis, quality control, quality assurance, safety, blood-borne pathogen/infection control, specimen handling/processing and documenting/reporting patient results.
While controls may affect certain decision-making opportunities, an incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment to monitor, control and assess test conditions, specimen quality, chemical/biologic reactions, and instrument function; identify atypical organisms; solve unexpected problems; correlate quantitative, biochemical, physiologic and morphologic data to verify results; and evaluate/ implement new procedures. Work requires professional knowledge of the four major disciplines of laboratory practice (e.g. transfusion service, chemistry, hematology and microbiology). Some positions may also require knowledge of a particular specialty discipline (e.g.
toxicology). An incumbent applies professional knowledge of scientific principles and theory to determine the causes or possible significance of abnormalities and departures from the norm when test results do not conform to expectations; to alter procedures and techniques to correct problems; and to correlate and interpret test results (within the framework of the discipline) based on an understanding of the underlying physiologic phenomena and relationships among tests. Essential Duties: Conducts pretesting and processing samples (Pre-Analytic); stains and prepares slides of specimen material for microscopic examination and evaluation; prepares chemical solutions and reagents. Evaluates and determines validity of test sample value(s) based on testing of quality control materials.
Sets up and adjusts laboratory equipment and apparatus appropriate for the designated test(s). Performs, analyzes, interprets, and confirms testing of samples (Analytic); maintains growth and virulence of cultures; observes reactions and makes/records readings of test results; keeps clinical laboratory records in accordance with established procedures. Requests additional specimens/samples to replace compromised material. Recognizes and defines testing problems and evaluates methods for their solution.
Recognizes and addresses unexpected test reactions, errors and discrepancies; identifies technical, instrumental or physiologic causes of problems (e.g. test conditions, chemical reactions, instrument function, patient variables, interfering drugs). May determine solutions based on the theory of reactions on which the procedures are based and other clinical data. Operates complex automated analysis equipment and/or laboratory computer system to perform designated tests.
Documents and delivers test results (Post-Analytic); verifies and finalizes test results, evaluates collected laboratory data, and produces and distributes test results. Records test data, makes statistical calculations, compares laboratory results with normal values and investigates atypical results to determine cause. Performs quality control testing, checks normal ranges, reviews and validates results. Provides basic consultative services regarding laboratory procedures, test results and examinations to medical staff, laboratory personnel and other healthcare providers, including answering questions within area of competence for physicians and other healthcare providers.
May suggests additional assays that could clarify or amplify the physicianâs diagnosis. Applies an understanding of the standard reference methods used to check the accuracy of analytical results obtained by different methods. Utilizes the LIS in the performance of job duties, including looking up patient information and entering testing data/results. Reviews and interprets data analyzed and developed by laboratory personnel.
Consults with management and medical staff concerning difficult or unusual data or results. Develops the skills of new employees and students by providing on-the-job training and orientation. Prior to end of shift, ensure that the reports (e.g. WorkCenter Pending (WCP) are clean (e.g.
no old account #, all stats are accounted for and completed, all outstanding microbiology accn #âs are accounted for) and that notes are left or communicated to the on-coming shift. Operates and maintains standard lab instrumentation and equipment; records, calculates and plots known control values on technical instruments to ensure their reliability and accuracy in reporting results. Regularly cleans, performs/documents routine maintenance and calibrates instruments and equipment. Troubleshoots test systems and identifies problems that could adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action.
Certifies and corrects equipment/instrumentation malfunction within designated scope of responsibility. Performs related duties as required. QualificationsEducation/Experience: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited college/university, including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics AND successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technologist program, OR MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification AND a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited college/university to include ASCP- or NCA-required college credits, AND two years of full-time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Immunohematology, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology and Clinical Microscopy within the past ten years that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities,OR Baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited college/university, including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND five years of full-time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in the discipline for which the candidate is applying, to include Microbiology, Chemistry, Immunohematology, Hematology, AND meets the acceptable route of Categorical certification through ASCP or NCA in the area for which the candidate is apply. License/Certification: National Registration as an MLS (ASCP) or Certification with the U.S.
Dept. of Health and Human Services as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Categorical Certification by the ASCP in the discipline for which the candidate is applying (e.g. Immunohematology, Microbiology), OR current application accepted by ASCP pending examination. If not already held, one-time national certification is expected to be obtained within the first six months of employment.
Depending on assignment, current certification through Washington State as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy may be required. Where applicable, certification as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy must be obtained within eight (8) weeks of assignment. Phlebotomy duties will be assigned once the incumbent receives certification as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy.
