The Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology High-throughput Screening (HTS) Facility is looking to recruit a software developer with expertise in web and database technologies to join our team in creating tools for chemistry and scientific data analysis. These projects will support drug discovery and biomedical research in areas including cancer, neuroscience, diabetes, and infectious diseases.

We build web applications for chemists and biologists to help them design, visualize, and analyze their experiments and ultimately to get more out of their data. Develop custom visualizations using javascript and the html canvas. Extend the grammar for our data analysis DSL. Create AJAX-based UIs that exchange data with a RESTful back end.

We are looking for a motivated software developer with a web background and an interest in life sciences and medicinal chemistry applications to join a small but growing development team. We create web-based apps using Ext JS and custom javascript on the client side, a variety of custom tools for the server, and Oracle to store our data. We are not married to specific technologies to solve our group's current or future problems, and you'll have the freedom to advocate for and implement solutions using frameworks that make sense.

If you love solving problems, love web application development, speak fluent javascript, love relational databases, and get excited about automating processes wherever possible, we'd love to hear from you! There is plenty of opportunity to shape your own direction within this position, whether it be toward lab process automation, statistical data analysis, rich web UI's, or just about anything else that can help scientists or help our team to help the science. There is a great chance that we can find a problem you would love to solve, using technologies you would love to work with.

This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, life sciences, or related field of study. Previous experience working in a laboratory environment and automating processes is preferred. The successful candidate will possess excellent organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in modern javascript, preferably with experience with the jquery or Ext JS frameworks.
  • Proficiency in translating a conceptual model into a set of relational database objects.
  • Expertise in SQL, and proficiency in creating efficient SQL queries that interact with a large database schema.
  • Experience with source control and software build automation and integration systems.
  • Ability and aptitude to automate a broad diversity of data capture, reduction, analysis, archival and reporting processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
