Property and Casualty Insurance Company

Company Overview:
The Company is a property and casualty insurance company. Its products are distributed primarily through independent retail insurance agents in multiple states.

The leadership team is deep in industry talent and expertise. The President has enjoyed significant success in his career in the insurance industry including significant promotions in key executive positions with a major global carrier. The CFO has extensive industry experience and has been with the Company for a number of years.

Today, the Company continues to execute on its strategies for significant, profitable, growth in its core states by continuing to leverage its abilities in serving its target market.

Position Overview:
This significant post is designed for the high integrity financial executive with experience that combines high caliber and sound financial leadership with proven operational effectiveness. The Controller will help shape how the Company looks at financial accounting, control and reporting issues from both a GAAP and a Statutory (SAP) basis. The talents the Company will draw upon will include a skill set that encompasses the classic disciplines of financial accounting and control, financial reporting, operational analysis and expense management. Responsibilities will include overall direction of the accounting, tax, variance analysis and reporting, payroll and cash management functions.

The Controller will serve as a credible, knowledgeable and trusted resource to the CFO of the Company, as well as to the senior leadership team. The selected executive will offer the organization quality, meaningful financial accounting and control disciplines.

The Controller will have significant latitude to function in a very consultative fashion and to apply his/her experience and abilities to increase operational effectiveness. The Controller will work with staff and management in accounting and finance and in other departments to identify opportunities for increased effectiveness. The Controller will enhance the relationships with internal and external auditors, regulators, and with internal Company clients.

The Controller will add a dimension to the Company?s financial accounting, control and reporting capabilities with the expectation that this will support achievement of growth targets and evolution of the Company to become an even stronger enterprise.

Reporting Relationship:
The position will report directly to the CFO. The Controller will directly manage a department with a staff of seven to eight in accounting and finance.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Accounting and financial reporting on a U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis. Prior national audit firm experience with insurance company accounts or prior insurance company experience preferably with a publicly traded insurance enterprise and including SEC reporting and compliance

Accounting and financial reporting for insurance subsidiary using statutory accounting (SAP)

Income tax planning and provision preparation with assistance from external tax support

General ledger monitoring and control (current G/L is Microsoft Dynamics)

Payroll management in-house (Microsoft Dynamics)

Cash management functions, including:
Cash flow management

Coordination of information and support on investments with internal investment manager

Key liaison with external auditor

Initiatives consistent with Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) Section 404 and other compliance.

Serve as a key relationship with state departments of insurance on financial and accounting matters, including coordination of all regulatory financial examinations

Analyzing, monitoring and reporting key business metries, including:

Key statutory metrics versus key GAAP metrics

Core success measures

Developing and implementing other new and valuable metrics

Accounting and compliance with provisions of Company?s reinsurance program, as relevant

Develop collaborative relationships with departments in oversight of various operations support functions (i.e. premium billing and collections, premium audits, etc.)

Provide business planning and budgeting support and variance analysis in alignment with business and reporting needs

Direct supervision over Assistant Controller plus a complement of six to seven support staff in general accounting and statutory accounting and payroll

Desired Technical and Management Competencies:
Financial, general accounting, payroll, statutory accounting (preferred) and tax accounting (preferred) leadership including insurance company experience

Deep GAAP and Statutory (preferred) accounting and reporting experience. Up-to-date, knowledgeable and conversant in GAAP and SAP (preferred).

Strong understanding and experience implementing effective control systems

Cash management, Tax and Payroll management

Clear understanding of financial operations, accounting and key metrics (preference in a property/casualty insurance company)

Knowledge and experience with managing payroll

Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

Superior oral and written communications skills

Effectively manages designated relationships with external agencies in multiple regulatory markets

Hands-on and proactive management style

Able to design and execute models and forecasts

Appropriate tenure in finance/accounting (preferred within the insurance industry)

Exceptional background in management of direct and indirect reports

B.S/B.A. required. CPA required

National auditing firm experience preferred

A manager level individual from a national auditing firm with financial services industry (preferably insurance) practice responsibility would be considered

Management and Technical Competencies:
Education and Experience

Bachelors Degree and CPA with appropriate years of relevant experience within a company and/or within a national auditing firm preferably with insurance practice

Experience leading an accounting/finance department. Or equivalent finance responsibility

Significant experience and success in developing financial control and reporting capabilities that improve performance and results

Possess extraordinary quantitative and analytical aptitude
