Los Angeles-based digital entertainment magazine, Backstory,
seeks a stylishly new freelance art director.
Candidates should possess strong typographic expertise and a
sophisticated design sense with a cultivated eye for unique layout.
He or she should have extensive, first-hand magazine knowledge,
editorial design experience and comfort in managing projects from
conception to completion under tight deadlines.
The most challenging part of the process for laying out a
digital magazine is it needs to be laid out in InDesign both
vertically and horizontally - because this is how the viewer is
able to see both iterations. We also use the Digital Publishing
Suite tools from Adobe as well.
The good news is that using InDesign's liquid layout - you're
able to keep all of you article assets in *one* document which
means when the veritcal iteration is complete, you're ready to
mirror it in the horizontal almost immediately.
  • Experience working with illustrators and
  • Expertise with creative technologies including Mac-based
Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6) programs: InDesign, Photoshop,
Illustrator and ability to learn Adobe's Digital Publishing
  • Experience preferred or ability to learn Adobe's Digital
Publishing Suite (the tablet magazine production software) along
with the drive to use our Adobe Gold Customer support plan to get
technical help when needed, in order to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and ability to
quickly adapt and formulate solutions to production issues.
  • Able to produce deliciously creative work, but remain
highly organized and detail-oriented when it comes to finalizing
articles by integrating the various revisions that are required for
each piece.
  • Detail-oriented is a must for self-proofing pages while
working with our editors and copy editor (who also proof pages),
plus with ability to take art direction notes in order to revise
pages for editorial and quality control purposes.
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter possessing
strong intellectual curiosity and must be a conceptual, strategic
team player with a proven record of producing beautifully designed
pages and collaborating to improve production techniques.
  • Ability to troubleshoot layout and ensure that deadlines
are maintained and workload is managed efficiently.
  • Ability to work with precision and thrive under at times
rigorous deadlines, including extended daily and weekend schedules
when necessary (usually when nearing issue go-live dates). The
