Reporting to the Executive Director of Capital and Leadership Giving, and as a senior member of the capital and leadership gifts team, the Director is charged with developing and executing on a holistic regional prospect development strategy to increase and sustain significant solicitation activity in service to the FAS campaign. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: recruiting, hiring, training and managing prospect managers and support staff; contributing significantly to the FAS Capital and Leadership Giving senior team’s development and execution of capital and leadership prospect strategies. The Director provides managerial, motivational, strategic and operational oversight to our 10-person San Francisco-based team, which is responsible for assigning prospects, coordinating the event and activities calendar, making decisions regarding key travelers and activities in the region, convening regular status and regional planning meetings, and, in coordination with other colleagues, identifying, and building and/or maintaining regional Campaign committees. The Director maintains highly successful fundraising activity with an assigned pool of high-capacity prospects by cultivating and soliciting for gifts supporting FAS priorities. As a member of the management team, the Director will coordinate with other senior members of the FAS development office to help further improve fundraising efficiency and efficacy; may participate in University-wide committees and work on special projects as needed. Ability to keep the members of our satellite office motivated for, connected to and prepared to deliver on Harvard’s campaign goals is paramount.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 10 years experience in development including a minimum of three years of fundraising management experience required; experience in higher education development preferred; must demonstrate successful direct experience in major gifts fundraising; including issue-based fundraising; advanced knowledge of fundraising strategies and techniques; volunteer management experience a plus; experience managing a pool of high capacity prospects, and a proven record of moving prospects strategically through stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation, closure and stewardship to secure high-six- and seven-figure gifts; experience staffing high-level academic or other leaders in prospect meetings/trips and experience with turning institutional priorities into compelling gift opportunities for donors, as well as planning and execution of multiple donor engagement events annually. Ability to empower, motivate, manage the expectations of, and facilitate the solicitation activity of, senior volunteer fundraising leadership. Must also demonstrate ability for and interest in administrative functions, such as hiring and evaluating support staff, nurturing and mentoring professional staff, and managing basic office functions. Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, written communication and presentation skills required. Computer literacy required; must have experience with Windows and databases. Note: This position requires overnight travel; availability/flexibility to travel is required for this position.

Additional Qualifications
Strong ability to build and nurture multi-year relationships with donors, as well as to work in a collegial, collaborative manner with Capital and Leadership Gift Officers, other FAS, UDO and University staff; requires thoughtful and professional excellence given interaction with senior administration members and senior faculty; superb written and oral communication skills; flexibility; and the ability to multi-task without losing focus on both short- and long-term goals.
