Under general supervision, cleans, following good aseptic technique, processes, sterilizes and assembles patient care equipment, supplies and instruments according to prescribed procedures and techniques. In doing so, decontaminates instruments and other reusable items using cleaning and decontaminating equipment, detergents and disinfecting agents. Prepares, wraps, packages, seals, labels and sterilizes instruments, trays, equipment, linens and a variety of supplies using steam or Abtox sterilizers. Keeps accurate records of sterilization processes and monitoring according to hospital policy.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates decontamination, processing and sterilization equipment (sterilizers, washer-sterilizer and sonic washer, Pasteurmatic, heat sealer and dryer, etc.) according to procedure, following manufacturer's instructions.
Cleans and decontaminates patient care equipment such as infusion and feeding pumps, commodes, walkers, etc. with hospital approved detergents and germicidal agents.
Prepares linen packs, instruments sets, procedure trays, and individual supplies accurately following specific lists, instructions and processing procedures.
Sterilizes instruments, treatment trays, linen packs, miscellaneous supplies and equipment using steam or Abtox sterilizers.
Decontaminates and process all Mother Baby Department instrument sets and trays.
Decontaminates and process all reusable trays and sets for Emergency Room, Nursing Units and other hospital departments.
Consistently utilizes biological and chemical monitors according to established protocols. Immediately alerts appropriate personnel according to policy any problems with monitoring and participates in recall of supply processes if this is necessary.
Assists with maintaining complete and accurate sterilization monitoring records, departmental processing requisitions and records of Safety Monitoring Systems.
Communicates and interacts appropriately with other department personnel to meet their needs on a timely basis.
Makes rounds to departments to pick up and deliver instruments that require processing. Picks up all used equipment and returns to the department for cleaning.
Coordinates sending supplies outside the hospital for Ethylene Oxide Sterilization as required. Communicates effectively with OR or other departments, the courier service and the sterilizing facility about the timely pickup and return of the critical items.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES NEEDED:
High school diploma, GED equivalent, or higher level of completed education from an accredited institution required.
Approximately three to four months of on the job experience and training is necessary in order to learn the use and safe handling of processing and sterilization equipment and monitoring systems, disinfectant solutions, aseptic technique and the Policies and Procedures of the department.
Ability to speak, write legible and read English in order to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency needs; understand and follow written and verbal cleaning, decontamination, sterilization and packaging procedures and to maintain accurate records and logs. Must be able to perform basic aritbinetic calculations as normally acquired through completion of high school.
Basic analytical skills necessary in order to maintain records indicating Sterile Processing activity.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to details for up to ninty percent of work time when decontaminating, processing, packaging, sterilizing and monitoring these processes.
Ability to walk and stand for up to ninety five percent of work time when cleaning, sterilizing, issuing supplies. Be able to lift, push carts of equipment and supplies of light to medium weight up to forty percent of time.
