Liberty Mutual Commercial Insurance IT is actively searching for a senior resource to join the Distribution and Marketing Services team, with a focus on user interface (UI) development practices and portal technologies. Commercial Insurance IT supports the Commercial Insurance business group which is the fourth largest commercial insurer in the US. Commercial Insurance IT leverages strengths to continue to simplify operations and invest in new technologies that provide competitive advantage. This is a Technologist position reporting to the Sr. Director of the Distribution and Marketing Services department. This position will collaborate with development teams across Commercial Insurance IT on UI designs, patterns, and technologies. The role will be responsible for the proper selection, deployment and use of portal technologies within Commercial Insurance. This senior technical leadership role works closely with a team within the DMS team, but also collaborates with Technologists, Architects, and principle developers across multiple departments. (Technologist is the "Architect-Level 1 position within Liberty's architecture family").
Collaboratively lead in setting the direction for the UI design standard & approach, as well as the direction and intent around portal technologies, within Commercial Insurance
Mentor and lead development staff; responsible for improving technical capabilities within the organization over time - specifically in front end development practices
Lead quality architectural design in projects that are aligned with defined roadmaps, strategies, and standards
The successful candidate will work closely with the development teams to identify, define and implement appropriate solutions for the various projects and needs
Able to appropriately communicate direction, status, technical issues, and risks to multiple levels of management, escalating as necessary
Works to investigate and forecast business and IT trends - participates in the definition of overarching technical direction.
Guide the development of technical standards within the UI and portal areas, based on long range plan and vision.
Manages the evolution of architectures over time, including retirements and new technology introduction
Initiates and maintains strategic partnerships between vendors, business partners, and IT
In-depth knowledge of and experience with User Interface Design principles, Human Factors, User Centered Design Processes, Interaction Design guidelines, Usability Methodologies, industry standards and trends, platform standards, and the software development process.
7+ years' experience working on enterprise-scale, multi-tier, web-based commercial software applications. Extensive experience with browser-based rich-client interfaces.
Must have held the role of Portal Developer or Architect for multiple Portal based solutions, and enterprise-scale solutions for large organizations.
2+ years design and development including developing JSR 168/286 Portlets, SharePoint WebParts, WSRP, JSPs and Servlets, SOAP-based Web Services.
Must have a proven track record with integrating solutions in disparate platforms and technologies.
BS degree in technical or business discipline or equivalent experience; technical Masters degree preferred
Generally a minimum of 10 years related technology experience. (Most staff have >15)
Solid knowledge of Java/.NET, server infrastructures, and SOA, including strategic trends and emerging technologies
Strong knowledge of XML standards and messaging approaches
Familiar with SDLC methodologies including RUP and Agile
Knowledgeable in software engineering languages and tools
Expert-level technical design skills
Familiar with architecture delivery processes and governance
Negotiation, facilitation, and consensus building skills
Highly developed communication skills; strong presentation skills
