Position Summary

The Respiratory Patient Care Tech provides patient care and supportive duties as delegated by the RRTs and CRTs. Assists with patient care responsibilities, performs EKGs, is responsible for the Smart Monitor setup and download for interpretation, fulfills frontline duty for RCS infection control of equipment and supplies, and works with minimal supervision to efficiently complete job duties.

Position Duties


Patient Care: Assists the RRT and CRT with patient care

Completes patient care: pulse-oximetry, EKGs (provides support to cardiology services by performing EKGs after hours, weekends and holidays by applying electrodes properly, accurately identifying patient on the EKG, preparing and processing the EKG for interpretation, entering orders and charges correctly), and equipment setup (including calibration, programming and downloading Smart Monitors) medical gas cylinders, and various oxygen delivery devices, and other patient care related assignments in a safe, efficient and timely manner.

Documents patient care and other assignments according to department guidelines.
Recognizes and reports changes in patient condition to licensed staff.
Communicates patient/family information to health care team members to assist with individualizing the patient plan of care.
Practices universal precautions/isolation techniques according to hospital policy.
Recognizes unsafe and emergency situations and initiates appropriate response.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Indirect Patient Care: Assists the RRT and CRT in practicing cost effective use of equipment and supplies

Ensures RCS supply inventory is organized, cleaned, and promptly restocked for optimal availability to patient care.
Assists with maintaining a clean, orderly patient and department environment.
Acts as a courier as needed to meet daily unit/department requirements.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Professional Performance: Demonstrates professional demeanor, commitment to job skills, and adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Adheres to ACH policies and procedures including, but not limited to, patient privacy, Corporate Compliance, Code of Conduct, and others, and reports related concerns to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
Maintains Basic Life Support certification and completes appropriate educational activities to maintain and increase competency, including all required hospital and department in-services and training.
Recognizes current level of knowledge and skills and is self-directed in seeking resources/learning activities to enhance competency.
Displays initiative and ability to identify and practice optimal infection control processes both in patient contact and equipment cleaning/maintenance.
Utilizes available communication tools (Microsoft Outlook, staff meetings and bulletin boards) to remain informed.
Self-manages work time to accurately and promptly complete duties every shift.
Communicates effectively and appropriately with everyone. Displays professional conduct and interaction with patients/families, RCS staff, nurses, physicians and all others
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Performance Improvement/Research

Looks for ways to promote quality and make things better for work activities and patient services, and communicates those ideas with the appropriate supervisor.
Continuously monitors patient documentation and reports discrepancies appropriately.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

Education Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Note: One year (minimum of 30 hours) of college credit preferred in Health Sciences.

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college program or technical school or nursing diploma
  • Note: Student of an advanced practitioner respiratory care program preferred.

1 year previous patient care experience
