Performs a variety of specific patient care procedures to assist the registered nurse and/or physician. Coordinates patient and clerical activities on a nursing unit, including order entry, documentation, communication of information necessary for patient care, system management, chart assembly and analysis, customer service/public relations activities related to patient care and unit operations. Ensures accurate data collection and data entry to facilitate customer satisfaction and timely and accurate reimbursement for services. Performs patient care activities as assigned by the RN according to established nursing procedures. Performs or assists patients to perform activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, ambulating and toileting. Performs procedures requiring a knowledge of medical/surgical asepsis such as simple dressing changes, surgical preps, maintenance and emptying of common drains, oral pharyngeal and nasal pharyngeal suctioning, maintenance and irrigation of routine NG tubes, maintenance of tube feedings (administration/adding feeding, checking residual and checking tube placement), removal of saline lock, insertion and removal of urinary catheters and collection of specimens. When assigned to units with cardiac monitoring, will also admit/discharge patient from cardiac monitoring system, run strips and mount them on chart, turn telemetry off and on per procedure and as directed, change EKG electrodes and batteries and clean/maintain telemetry transmitters. Transcribes physician written orders; accurately enters these and other orders into hospital computer system, triggering patient charges which impact reimbursement. Effectively operates various communication systems (e.g. telephone, paging, intercom, nurse call) in a courteous and friendly manner, triaging calls using appropriate communication system etiquette, in order to facilitate proper response. Works collaboratively with unit and other departments to assure coordination of scheduling of diagnostic procedure and/or treatments; monitors and reconciles process as determined by individual unit through the established shift report process. Assists in maintaining control of floor stock through monitoring inventory, ordering and distributing supplies and equipment.Retrieves, sorts, and classifies information received from the printer, including labels and forms, as well as medical record documents. Maintains a complete and accurate medical record through integrating lab reports, x-ray reports, consultation, etc., into the medical record according to established format as they are received on the floor.
Verifies an accurate and complete medical record through concurrent chart analysis for signatures required; assures security and confidentiality of the medical record while on the patient unit.
