Director of Development

CLASP, the Center for Law and Social Policy, is seeking a Director of Development. Based in Washington D.C., CLASP's mission is to improve the lives of low-income people. CLASP focuses on strengthening families, creating pathways to education and work, reducing poverty and advancing racial equity. CLASP's issue areas include child care and early education, child welfare, disconnected and disadvantaged youth, income and work supports, access to postsecondary education, job quality, and poverty targeting. Each major issue area has a team leader.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

CLASP seeks a Director of Development to develop, coordinate and manage all aspects of a strategic fundraising plan and lead its financial resource development.

Strategy and Planning
  • Serve as a key senior leader in the organization, and support the Director to create the strategies and infrastructure necessary to fulfill CLASP's potential for significant organizational and revenue growth.
  • Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan to maintain existing support and broaden the base of support both with foundations and other sources of support.
  • Align resource development strategies with current program objectives and future capabilities.
  • Advise and strategize with executive director on overall fundraising strategies, processes, and procedures, and on specific grantseeking and funder-relations issues and opportunities.
  • Advise and strategize with executive director, finance director, communications director and team leaders on organizational issues including management, governance, and communications.
  • Research and cultivate new potential funding sources and assist senior staff in identifying organizational and project-specific funding opportunities.
  • Research new project specific ideas to determine the potential for funding.
  • Research and help senior staff consider new structures and staffing arrangements for pursuing the work.
  • Partner with CLASP team leaders, finance director and communications director to develop individualized multi-year programmatic, strategic and fundraising plans for each program team or area of work and assist team leaders in implementing those plans.
  • Keep abreast of issues and developments in the field of philanthropy and fundraising.
  • Explore ways and strategies to increase sources of revenue including but not limited to fee-for-service, government funding, individual giving, individual bequeaths, and event fundraising.
Proposal Development and Oversight
  • Advise senior staff in foundation protocols, relationship building/management, and grantseeking strategies.
  • Review concept papers, letters of intent, proposals, reports, and other fundraising-related documents drafted by team leaders and senior staff to ensure that funder requirements are met and whether editing is needed.
  • As necessary assist executive director and finance director with administrative details of proposal submission process, including preparation of budgets and other supporting materials and transmittal of those materials to funders.
  • Liaise with funders on matters related to proposed or current grants.
Grants and Contract Management
  • Be familiar with current grant and contract obligations, reporting requirements and reporting formats and templates and help executive director, finance director, team leaders, and communications director ensure those obligations and reporting requirements are met.
  • Develop and maintain database of current and prospective funders.
  • Oversee fundraising technology, including prospect research tools, databases, and online giving services.
  • Oversee preparation of narrative and financial reports to foundations and contractors and ensure team leaders have necessary background information and reporting templates.
Other Sources of Income
  • Oversee individual donor fundraising campaign.
  • Oversee CLASP fundraising events.
  • Oversee initiatives to raise funds from sources such as fee-for-service, government grants and contracts, individual gifts and bequeaths, and other strategies.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • A seasoned development professional and results-oriented leader with a multi-year track record of senior-level success leading and securing resource development for advocacy and policy organizations.
  • Able to work collaboratively with senior team leaders and communications program staff without formal supervisory authority to maintain existing foundation and contract support and oversee foundation and contract reporting as well as to identify and facilitate new foundation and non-foundation opportunities for CLASP.
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, goal-oriented, and capable of multi-tasking.
  • Self-starter with high energy who can manage multiple tasks and adapt and respond quickly to opportunities.
  • Strategic thinker who has the ability to build consensus across a diverse organization.
  • Bachelor's Degree or beyond.
  • Seasoned development professional with a minimum of ten years experience in foundation development, with at least 3 years of management experience.
  • Experience in and knowledge of national non-profit federal and state advocacy are also preferred.

Within CLASP limits, salary is commensurate with experience.
