Description: Group 75 – Optical Systems Engineering

The Optical Systems Engineering Group applies various aspects of mechanical, optical, and systems engineering to the development of space-borne, airborne, and terrestrial optical systems. Expertise includes integrated analysis capabilities combining structural and thermal analyses with optical design and systems engineering. These analysis tools support opto-mechanical design and a wide range of testing activities. Example projects include satellite passive imaging sensors, optics for space-based and ground-based laser communications systems, airborne laser radar and imaging systems on both manned and unmanned aircraft, and high power laser systems.

Position Description:
The selected candidate will be involved in the development of ground-based, air-borne and space-borne optical, electrical and mechanical systems. As a developing system engineer, the candidate will be responsible for working with a multi-disciplinary team to define architectures and requirements, perform system analyses, and lead the team through the design, hardware integration, test, and verification of programs. The work will include analyses, design, integration, and testing applied to the development of complex hardware from conceptual design through fabrication and field performance evaluation. The candidate must be interested in and knowledgeable on a broad range of challenging problems involving structures, mechanisms, thermal systems, aerodynamics, optics and electronics. This position involves working in close-knit teams with design, analyses and test personnel. The position may require special security clearances and travel to meetings and field sites.

Qualifications:
Education: BS Physics, Mechanical, Aero/Astro or Optical Engineering. Candidates with relevant experience as system engineer for space or airborne system hardware are preferred.

Experience: The candidate must have demonstrated experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, effective communication skills, and the ability to produce and present professional written reports and presentations.
