As a Gang Saw Operator at Columbia Falls Lumber, you will have the opportunity to:
Learn and operate the Gang Saw and Grader Edger in the sawmill.
Maintain the flow of lumber through the sawmill.
Optimize the quality of lumber at production pace.
Operation of the Gang Saw includes controlling cant transfers and conveyors; positioning cants for quality and grade; making adjustments in the computer to assist with production flow; reading micrometer to check lumber sizes; monitoring waste conveyors; changing saws and guides. Communicating with and assisting the twin saw operator when needed (putting cant on sharp chain, unplugging turnaround belts, fixing plugged outfeed belts, straightening slabs on slab deck, and logs standing in unscrambler). Making minor repairs to the machinery and maintaining equipment, including but not limited to keeping gang cameras and photo eyes clean; blowing down equipment; changing saws and guides as necessary; cleaning the equipment and feed rolls; moving cants by hand or with bars to correct jams; and operating a chain saw when necessary.
Operation of the Grader Edger includes monitoring cants going to the resaw and gang saw by handling lumber and operating controls switches to sort and feed lumber; starting and stopping the edger system to monitor lumber transfers; cutting/edging lumber to optimize grade and quality; clearing any lumber jams in the edger infeed or outfeed; monitoring the reader board and responding to error messages; positioning lumber wane up for the scanner and edger. Assisting gang and horizontal resaw operators with any problems. Maintaining continuous flow of flitches while separating good pieces from scrap; discharging waste through trash gate and placing them on in-feed to the edger optimizer; handling up to 20 pieces a minute while maintaining production flow. Making minor repairs to the machinery and maintaining equipment, including but not limited to assisting millwrights, and blowing down equipment.
When necessary, the Gang Saw Operator will assist with other production
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Experience: Prefer a minimum of 2 years of experience operating Gang Saw. Experience in a board mill is a plus.
Additional Requirements: The job of Gang Saw Very Heavy Duty job. Very Heavy Duty involves exertion of more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or more than 50 pounds frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds continuously to move objects.
A sense of urgency in terms of maximizing production, and minimizing downtime is necessary in this type of manufacturing environment.
Tasks performed involve work with equipment and material that require familiarity with formal safety procedures and the following of these procedures in order to maintain the safety of the work environment.
Candidates must have the ability to interpret and apply verbal and/or written instructions, and have good hand eye coordination.
Willingness to work varying shifts, overtime and weekends/holidays. The pre-employment process includes completing a medical evaluation, passing a drug screen and background check.
